#OTD in 1972: Chappell brothers created history by hitting a century in the same innings

On this day, 50 years ago, Ian Chappell and Greg Chappell scripted history by becoming the first pair of brothers to hit a century in the same Test innings. They achieved this unique feat in the fifth and final red-ball game against England at The Oval.

Ahead of this fixture, England were leading the series 2-1, and were well on course to win the Ashes. However, the young Aussie team produced a great performance to square up the series.

Australia in charge at end of first innings

England won the toss and opted to bat first. However, the openers could not help them get off to a good start. It took knocks from Peter Parfitt (51) and John Hampshire (42) to resurrect the innings. Then, wicket-keeper Alan Knott top-scored with 92 to power the hosts to a score of 284.

Dennis Lillee scalped five, while Ashley Mallett took three wickets for the visitors.

Australian openers also failed to lay a strong platform for the team. However, the Chappell brothers displayed composure to stabilize the innings, and then hit balls all around the park.

Ian hit 118 off 267, while Greg finished on 113 off 226 and created history. Australia's innings ended on 399, with a lead of 115 runs. Derek Underwood picked four wickets for the Three Lions.

In the second innings, England managed to score 356, with the contributions of 90 from Barry Wood and 63 from Knott. Lillee was again the pick of the bowlers for Australia with five scalps.

Afterwards, Keith Stackpole (79) and Ian (37) added 116 runs for the second wicket. Then, the duo of Paul Sheahan (44*) and Rod Marsh (43*) played fighting knocks to chase down the total of 242 and level the Ashes 1972 series 2-2.
