Alex Hales hopeful of a comeback into England squad for T20 WC 2022

Out-of-favour opener Alex Hales is hopeful of making a comeback into the England T20 setup for the upcoming ICC T20I World Cup 2022. Hales, who last played for England in 2019, has consistently scored runs in domestic cricket over the past two years.

Hales, playing for the Trent Rockets in The Hundred tournament, scored a brisk 27-ball 43 yesterday and expressed his desire to play for the Three Lions again.

"The last three years have probably been the best I've ever played in T20 cricket and particularly this year I feel in a really good place,"

"With a World Cup coming up in Australia, somewhere where I've scored an awful lot of runs in the last few years, I feel like I've got a lot to offer [England] in this format for sure," - Hales told BBC

Case for Hales

Lately, Jason Roy has struggled to find any form, scoring just 76 runs in England's last six T20Is, with white-ball coach Matthew Mott even hinting at dropping him if need be. Hales will fancy his chances of getting into the side in his place.

Why was Hales dropped?

The 33-year-old represented England in 60 T20Is scoring 1,644 runs, with one ton and eight fifties. Overall, Hales has played 352 T20s and accumulated 9,946 runs, including five centuries and 62 half-centuries.

Hales was dropped on the eve of the ICC World Cup in 2019 after failing a drug test, only to be lambasted by then ODI-skipper Eoin Morgan.

James Anderson all for Hales

England's leading Test wicket-taker James Anderson is of the opinion that Hales will be in the mix, with selectors on the lookout for Roy's replacement.

"Of course they'll be looking at him. He's somebody who over the last three years has played brilliantly in the T20 format. There's a new captain, a new coach and they will be looking at him."
