Contrary to expectations, India had a horrible start to the New Zealand home series, as the visitors bundled them out for 46, their lowest-ever total in Asia. As if this wasn't enough, the Indian fielders missed an opportunity to get rid New Zealand's experienced opener Tom Latham, giving him a lifeline at a crucial juncture of the match.
The incident occurred during the 13th over of New Zealand's innings when the hosts desperately needed someone to break the opening stand and draw the first blood. After starting his new over with a dot ball, Mohammed Siraj induced an outside edge of Latham's bat only to see the ball safely going through the first two slips.
From over the wicket, Siraj bowled a good-length ball, angling across Tom Latham. As the southpaw had a poke at it, the ball took the outside edge of his bat, flying straight towards the slip cordon.
However, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli had a miscommunication, waiting for each other to take the catch. Their dismal fielding effort gave Latham a lifeline besides rewarding four runs to the BlackCaps. The fielders' blunder made Indian captain Rohit Sharma angry, as the Mumbaikar instantly expressed his frustration.
New Zealand Claim The Driving Seat In Bengaluru
After restricting India to a paltry 46-run total, New Zealand had a magnificent start to their first innings. Skipper Latham and his opening partner Devon Conway neutralised the Indian pace attack before capitalising on the run-scoring opportunities. At the time of writing, the visitors were 67 for no loss, with Conway and Latham batting on 51* and 15*, respectively.
