At 38, Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh legend, is well past his prime, and it was evident during the ILT20 match between MI Emirates and Sharjah Warriors. Missing from the Bangladesh team for over a year, Shakib was expected to be a key part of the MI squad in the marquee tournament, but he failed to deliver the goods against the Warriorz, and captain Kieron Pollard had to take a harsh step.
Pollard makes harsh call to retire out Shakib Al Hasan
Batting first, MI Emirates were in a strong position to score a mammoth total, courtesy of a brilliant start from Muhammad Waseem and Jonny Bairstow. When Shakib came to bat, the team had high hopes from him as the all-rounder was sent ahead of captain Pollard.
However, on a wicket that had plenty of life for the batters, Shakib struggled for runs and couldn’t shift gears as he only accumulated 16 off 12 when a frustrated Pollard decided to make a harsh call, and Shakib was retired out as he came back to the pavilion. The decision paid off as Tajinder Singh and Romario Shepherd gave finishing touches and helped the team score 185.
IPL started the "retired out" trend as ILT20 follows footsteps
The IPL 2025 season saw a couple of incidents where the team decided to retire a player midway through their innings. Tilak Varma, the Mumbai Indians batter struggled against LSG. The MI side needed 204 runs to win, and Tilak couldn’t get going as the batter retired out to give others a shot at the target.
In the same season, Devon Conway, the CSK opener struggled for runs against PBKS, and despite scoring 69 off 49, the CSK side decided to call him back and was retired out as CSK needed 49 off 13 when he was called back.
