In what transpired as a one-sided contest, Delhi Capitals took a 42-run in the fifth match of the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2023 over UP Warriorz.

Lanning, Jonassen stands out

Asked to bat first, Delhi Capitals did not opt for a different approach than the last game as another successful opening partnership put them on top.

While Shafali Verma did not have much of an impact, Meg Lanning was at her imperious best as she asserted dominance throughout her stay at the crease.

Amidst Lanning's stellar 70-run knock, UP Warriorz had different bowlers chipping in for them. Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Ecclestone, Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Shabnim Ismail took a wicket each as despite being 144/4 in 14.2 overs, the Capitals were expected to be curtailed beyond 200 runs as their batting line-up did not go too deep.

However, Jess Jonassen and Jemimah Rodrigues plotted a special finish to the innings as their 34 and 42 runs respectively stretched the team's score to 211/4 by the end of 20 overs.

Jonasen betters her night

After a splendid batting outing, Jonassen came to deliver with the ball as she took a three-for and almost made the run-chase an impossible climb for the Warriorz.

Barring McGrath who scored a 50-ball 90, none of the UP batter passed muster.

As Jonassen with her left-arm spin kept running into the UP Warriorz batters, it was the case of when rather than if.

Eventually, the second innings ended with UP playing out their 20 overs, scoring 169 off them and losing the game by 42 runs.
