Thursday, July 3 was a historic day for Indian cricket and for the Test team captain, Shubman Gill as the young leader smacked the England bowlers in the 2nd Test and etched his name in the history books. He smashed 269 off 387 balls and only played 5% false short in his marathon innings to push the hosts on the back-foot.

His knock was near perfect as he hardly gave away any chances to the England fielders. However, the young batter will be disappointed as he missed out on a golden opportunity to score 300 runs in Test cricket, a feat achieved by very few.

Gill's 269 runs was the seventh-highest score by an Indian in the Tests, and the second-highest score ever by an Indian vs England. So, what is the highest registered score by an Indian batter in Test cricket and who achieved the feat?.

Former India opener, and aggressive batter, Virender Sehwag holds the Indian record for the highest Test score. The maverick opener bagged the historic feat during the 2008 Chennai Test against a quality South African bowling attack. He smashed 319 against a helpless attack and etched his name in the history books.

On a flat track of the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Sehwag mauled the Proteas attack and it was a near perfect innings by the opening batter. In reply to South Africa's 540, the Indian batters responded in style and the aggression was led by Sehwag who blasted 319, and scored his second double ton in Tests and became the first Indian to achieve this feat.

His magnificent innings was laced with 42 fours and five sixes as the game eventually ended in a draw.
