County Championship Division One Round-up: September 28

Day 3 of the County Championship Division One 2022 last round was played on Wednesday ( September 28). Here's a brief report on the matches that transpired at Canterbury, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and Northampton. 


Kent vs Somerset

Kent began Day 3 on 405/7 at Canterbury. The right-arm off-spinner Hamidullah Qadri was terrific to contribute 87 off 91, which then helped Kent to finish on 492. Kasey Aldridge was the pick of the bowlers with six scalps for the visitors.  

Trailing by 291 runs, Somerset had a dismal start, followed by a flurry of wickets in the middle as well. The in-form Tom Lammonby contributed 23, while Sajid Khan raced his way to 40 off 19, as Somerset were all-out for 139 and lost by an innings and 151 runs.

Yorkshire vs Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire were at 204/6 at start of Day 3's play. However, they could add only 29 runs before getting dismissed and setting a target of 241 runs.


In response to the chase, Yorkshire got support from Adam Lyth (49) and George Hill (36). But, the middle-order could not respond well leading to a collapse for the team. In the end, Dom Bess remained unbeaten on 79 off 103 balls, while Yorkshire was all-out for a total of 202 runs, and fell short of 18 runs. 

Zafar Gohar and David Payne scalped four wickets each for the Gloucs.

Lancashire vs Surrey

Surrey resumed the Day on 123/5, still trailing by 389 runs. The contribution of Jamie Overton (21) and Tom Lawes (26) saw them finishing on 209, and being enforced a follow-on. 

The Division One champions were off to a good start with Rory Burns (61) and Ryan Patel (36) steering the team at their pace. However, the rest of the batting unit failed to get going and surrendered to proficient Tom Hartley, and be dismissed for 173. They lost the game by an innings and 130 runs.

Warwickshire vs Hampshire

Hampshire's top-order could not do well enough to lift the team's spirits and fell in quick successions on Day 3. It was a sublime knock of 98 from the experienced James Vince, while Keith Barker slammed 76 to help them finish on 311, and take a lead of 39 runs. 



Afterwards,  Warwickshire opener Rob Yates (15) was dismissed early, while Henry Brookes was out for a duck. At the end of the Day's proceedings, they are on 62/2 with Dom Sibley batting on 29*, while Alex Davies at 16*.

Northamptonshire vs Essex

Northants were at 33/2 at the start of Day 3. The skipper Will Young (37) and contribution of 28 each from Luke Procter and James Sales paved them to finish on 163, and conceding a 100-run lead. 

However, the Essex team is certainly in trouble at the end, with the scoreline reading a score of 63/5, and the lead is now 163 runs. The likes of Ben Sanderson and Jack White will look to wrap up the tail in the morning session, and Northants will look to chase down the total on the final day.
