Virat Kohli in Raipur (Source: PTI)
In a rare sight, for the first time in 7 years, India has lost an ODI match where Virat Kohli has scored a century. After Kohli's back-to-back flashy knocks at Ranchi and Raipur, where he put up superb tons to help India, the hosts fell in the 2nd ODI.
Even after 350+ totals on board, though the Ranchi clash was victorious, Raipur turned out to be a disaster for the hosts. Apparently, this led to India breaking a 7-year streak of triumphs in matches where Virat Kohli scored a century in ODIs.
India breaks rare record for instances when Virat Kohli scored a century
Incidentally, the last time India lost an ODI match despite Kohli scoring a century was in March 2019 at Ranchi. Kohli stood up with his 123 runs in that match but saw Australia dominate the scoreboard.
Occasions when Virat Kohli scored a century but India lost the match:
- 107 vs England, Cardiff (September 2011)
- 123 vs New Zealand, Napier (January 2014)
- 117 vs Australia, Melbourne (January 2016)
- 106 vs Australia, Canberra (January 2016)
- 121 vs New Zealand, Mumbai (October 2017)
- 107 vs West Indies, Pune (October 2018)
- 123 vs Australia, Ranchi (March 2019)
- 102 vs South Africa, Raipur (December 2025)
After March 2019 clash against Australia, Kohli has been a phenomenal force with the bat every time India won, be it chasing or setting up a huge total, until December 3 when India lost the second ODI to the Proteas.
Kohli's grit in vain as India bowlers fail to defend total
Though the talismanic Indian batter made a fabulous 102-run knock by bashing South African bowlers at Raipur, the dewy evening played the villain for India's shambolic loss, where pacers Harshit Rama, Arshdeep Singh, and especially Prasidh Krishna were given a good beating by South African batters Aiden Markram, Matthew Breetzke, and Dewald Brevis
Nevertheless, while Virat Kohli has already piled up 237 runs from his two matches at an average of 118.50, the series currently stands level at 1-1, with the final match set to be the decider at Visakhapatnam on December 6.
