Team Previews

Australia

This will be Australia’s first game in this format since winning the World Cup in November. Australia got off to a very poor start in the 2023 Cricket World Cup but then went on a fantastic run to lift the trophy. Although they have picked some new names for this series, they have plenty of strength in depth across both batting and bowling. We expect to see Australia hand out international debuts to Lance Morris, Xavier Bartlett and Jake Fraser-McGurk in this ODI in Melbourne on Friday. Test opener Steve Smith will captain the team with Pat Cummins rested from the series.

West Indies

After levelling a Test series on Australian soil by a 1-1 margin,  West Indies  will be back in action to play a three-match ODI series. The Windies scripted history a few days back by breaching the Gabba fortress, where they won a Test match in Australia for the first time after 1997. The last time West Indies won a bilateral ODI series against Australia was way back in 1995. West Indies have played only three bilateral ODI series against Australia on Australian soil and they have never won any of those series.

AUS vs WI, 1st ODI: Pitch Report

There will be good pace in the wicket and also turn for the spinners in Melbourne. Melbourne Cricket Ground offers a balanced surface in white-ball cricket. Ground offers longer boundaries, making batters' jobs a little difficult at this venue. The average first innings score here is 264 with teams batting first winning 78 of 158 ODI matches so far.

  • Only two months before he won the World Cup with 23 dismissals.
