After winning the toss, Zimbabwe opted to bowl against the Tigers on a wicket that they expected to offer some swing and bounce, at least in the early stage of the match, considering the freshness of the wicket.

Bangladesh had a good start to their innings with Tamim Iqbal (19) and Anamul Haque (76) going strong till the eighth over when a run-out mixup between the duo caused the former to return back to the pavilion with 41 on the board. Two more wickets fell in the same over to Brad Evans in a flash, and the scorecard read 47/3 within ten overs.

The good thing for the visitors was their opener Haque was still on the crease when former T20 skipper Mahmudullah Riyad (39) came to accompany him, and they stitched together a 77-run stand for the fourth wicket. With the departure of their opener, the next man who came to the rescue was Afif Hossain (85), whose resistance from one end held their innings together with wickets falling from the other end.

At the halfway mark of the match, Bangladesh could manage 256 for the loss of nine wickets, with Brad Evans and Luke Jongwe picking two wickets each.
