Indian right-arm wrist-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal had a memorable day at the office during the 2nd ODI against England as he claimed 4 wickets to register the best figures by an Indian at the 'Home of Cricket'.
Chahal eventually ended up with figures of 4/47 in his ten overs, which included the prized scalps of Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali.
Just like in the powerplays, India have struggled to take wickets regularly during the middle-overs since the last World Cup. One of the major reasons behind that has been the poor form of their ace spinner, Chahal.
Since the 2019 World Cup, Chahal has managed just 36 wickets in 22 innings at an average of 31.63, four of which came today.
Indian wily tweaker spun a 'perfect web'!
It was a big test for the Haryana cricketer as he had a well-set Jonny Bairstow to contend with. Bairstow, who is in the form of his life at the moment, tried to attack Chahal from the word go.
And while he did succeed in smashing the premier Indian spinner for a boundary, it was Chahal who had the last laugh as the Yorkshireman missed the attempted slog sweep to see his stumps rattled.
Chahal then landed two more body blows on the home side as Root and Stokes ended up missing their attempted conventional and reverse-sweeps, respectively, to get trapped plumb in front.
With Moeen Ali threatening to take England to a decent score, the tweaker once again proved to be the breakthrough man the southpaw holed out to deep midwicket.
Chahal inscribed his name in the Hall of Fame
Chahal eventually finished with figures of 4/47, and in the process, he overhauled former all-rounder Mohinder Amarnath's tally to claim the best figures by an Indian in an ODI at Lord's Cricket Ground.
Amaranth had claimed 3/12 in 7 overs in the historic 1983 World Cup final against the West Indies. He had also scored a priceless 26 in that game and was rightly adjudged the 'Player of the Match'.
Meanwhile, England were bowled out for 246 in 49 overs, with Jasprit Bumrah cleaning up the tail. If India manage to chase this down, then it will give them their first ODI series win in the country since 2014. But at the moment, the Men in Blue are crawling with four wickets down.
