Wriddhiman Saha in talks to join Tripura as player and mentor after CAB fallout

Wriddhiman Saha played the last of his 122 first-class matches back in December last year at the Wankhede Stadium. The cricketer has since been overlooked from India’s Test wicketkeeping role and was even side-lined for February’s home series against Sri Lanka, and uncapped KS Bharat was announced as the backup glovesman to Rishabh Pant.

Because of repeated omissions from the national side, the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman had earlier claimed that he will be prioritising IPL and domestic cricket going forward. The 37-year-old also added that he will be looking for better prospects at the domestic level after his fallout with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).

As reported by NDTV, Saha is currently looking for the role of player-cum-mentor for Tripura. However, he will be requiring a clearance from CAB and the BCCI.

“He wants a role of being the player-cum-mentor for Tripura. He has been in talks with some Apex Council members in Tripura but nothing has been finalized yet”, said an official.

A glance at Wriddhiman Saha’s career and IPL 2022 glory

The Bengal cricketer was one of the headline acts of Gujarat Titans’ titular campaign at the recently-concluded IPL 2022 season. The right-handed wicketkeeper-batsman charted 317 runs across 11 games at an alluring T20 average of 31.70. He belted three half-centuries throughout the tournament and scored his runs at a strike-rate of 122.39.

The keeper made his domestic debut for Bengal in 2007. Three years later, he donned the Indian colours in a home Test against South Africa.

Saha received his first promotion of India’s full-time wicketkeeping job after legendary cricketer MS Dhoni quit Test cricket in December 2014. As of now, he has aggregated 1,353 Test runs with three tons and six fifties across 40 matches.
