Women’s T20 Challenge 2022: Kiran Navgire crushes Trailblazers' dream, as Velocity book their berth

Kiran Navgire's fearless 69 of just 34 deliveries secured a ticket to the finale for Velocity. Both the teams entered the final group stage match with the hopes of booking their ticket to the finals, as Supernovas had already qualified for their 4th consecutive final.

Deepti Sharma won the toss and asked the Trailblazers to bat first. Batting first, the team scored an impressive score of 190 runs on the board. Now the stipulations for both the teams were such that Velocity needed to achieve a minimum of 159 runs to advance to the finals irrespective of the result of the match, and Trailblazers required to win the match with at least a margin of 32 runs.

In a high octane run chase, Velocity fell short of the target resulting in a victory for the Trailblazers, but they ended their innings with a score of 174/9, scoring fifteen runs more than the minimum required. This feat helped them advance to their maiden final in 4 editions of the tournament.

What's fair to say is that at the end of the match, it's the women's cricket that emerged victorious. So let's look at the proceedings and highlights of the game as it proceeded till its very last ball.

Trailblazers put a heavy score to chase for Velocity

Asked to bat first, Trailblazers lost an early key wicket of Smriti Mandhana in the 3rd over as she departed for a single run. After they were firing bullets at the Velocity bowlers, Sabbhineni Meghana was hitting the ball at a strike rate of 155 and played a brilliant knock of 73 off just 47 deliveries.

Her partner in crime was Jemimah Rodrigues, who scored a beautiful and balanced knock of 66 in 44 deliveries and both the batters celebrated a 113-run stand.

A sigh of relief for the Velocity bowlers came in the 15th over when Sneh Rana dismissed Meghana and broke the partnership. Trailblazers managed to score 60 runs in the last five overs with fast-hitting cameos by Hayley Matthews and Sophia Dunkley.

At the end of 20 overs, Trailblazers scored 190 runs and needed to restrict Velocity to under 169 runs to qualify for the finals.

Kiran Navgire becomes the hero for Velocity

Chasing a big total, Shafali Verma and Yastika Bhatia started precisely at the pace that the doctor ordered. However, both the batters were dismissed in quick succession in the powerplay. After the end of 6 overs, Velocity was 68/2

The match was quite balanced at that point, however, Velocity needed a good partnership, and that's just what they got, courtesy of the Superstar of the match Kiran Navgire.

Kiran came to bat and started smashing every ball out of the park and shifted the match's momentum completely towards Velocity. Kiran smashed the fastest 50 of the Women's T20 Challenge. She scored a 50 out of just 25 deliveries.

Kiran eventually ended her innings at a score of 69 off 34 deliveries with a strike rate of 202. However, by the time Trailblazers got her wicket, the match had already slipped out of their hands. Velocity was 153/6 in 16.4 overs and required just 16 runs in 20 deliveries.

Post Kiran's dismissal, the pace of the innings took a hit, and their intention was quite visible as they were happy losing the match as long they managed to get past 159. Eventually, Simran Bahadur's 12 off 10 balls helped Velocity reach the finals.

The Trailblazers whatsoever won the match by a margin of 16 runs. The final between Supernovas and Velocity will be played on 28th May.

IPL 2022 | KL Rahul claims all-time record after innings vs RCB

KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Eliminator at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens. The loss ended their maiden campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL) season after they finished third on the points table in the league stage. A couple of fielding blunders allowed the RCB to get to 207-4 off their 20 overs. Later, the LSG batters could not keep up to the high-octane run-chase in the knockout fixture, despite a rebellious knock from their captain. Rahul cracked 79 runs from just 58 balls, all while clubbing three hits to the fence and five over it. Apart from Deepak Hooda, the LSG skipper did not receive much support in the middle, and his dismissal eventually crashed title hopes for his side. Interestingly, the match against RCB marked the 100th IPL inning for Rahul. One of the most consistent batters in the tournament’s history, the elegant right-hander is the only player to aggregate 500+ runs in four successive IPL seasons. Moreover, he is also the only batter to compile over 600 runs in a year on four different occasions in IPL. The Karnataka stalwart added another feather to his already illustrious batting cap post his 79-run knock against his former side. The cricketer now has the distinction of scoring the most runs after 100 innings in the IPL. As of now, he has stacked up a staggering 3,889 runs at a healthy average of 48.01. Next on the list is T20 behemoth Chris Gayle with 3,626 runs. Here is a look at five batters with the most IPL runs after 100 innings: KL Rahul – 3,889 runs Chris Gayle – 3,626 runs David Warner – 3,373 runs Faf du Plessis – 3,185 runs Suresh Raina – 2,901 runs Despite Rahul’s impressive run to the top, he holds the second-worst strike-rate among the five listed batters. His strike rate of 136.22 is second only behind current RCB skipper Faf du Plessis’ 131.18. Unsurprisingly, West Indies legend Gayle holds the highest striking ability with his clobbering rate of 151.21 runs per 100 balls.

#OTD in 1999 | Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid stitched the first-ever 300+ run stand in ODIs

On this day in 1999, Indian batting stalwarts Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid etched their names in history by putting up a first-ever stand of 300+ runs in ODIs. They claimed this unique feat in a group fixture against Sri Lanka in the ODI World Cup at Taunton. Ahead of this fixture, India had just one win in three appearances and was in desperate need of a win to keep their hopes alive of qualifying for the Super 6 stage. On the other hand, Sri Lanka also had the same criteria to progress into the next stage. Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga invited India to bat first. Left-handed opener Sadagoppan Ramesh hit a boundary in the fourth ball of the innings but was undone by a peach of a delivery from Chaminda Vaas, which took his off stump in the subsequent ball. After that, Ganguly and Dravid played cautiously but hit the loose deliveries away, especially the ball at their legs. They were impressive to time the ball well against Vaas and hit multiple boundaries in his fourth and fifth over of the spell. At the 10-over mark, India was at a commanding position with 70+ runs on the board. In the 15th over of the innings, Dravid brought up his half-century off just 43 balls. In the 23rd over, Ganguly completed his fifty 68 balls. A couple of overs later, Muttiah Muralitharan missed the run-out chance of Ganguly, which could have turned the tables in their favour. With their eyes set on the pitch, both the batters scored consistent boundaries all around the park. Then, in the 36th over, Dravid scored his 5th ODI century off 102 balls. Three overs later, Ganguly hit his 7th century in the 50-overs format. ‘Dada’ often charged against Muralitharan to hit him sixes on the mid-on and straight boundaries. On the other hand, 'Mr. Dependable' made good use of the pacers to accelerate the run rate. In the 46th over, Muralitharan dropped Ganguly's catch at long-on, but darted an accurate throw to run-out Dravid for a well-made 145 off 129 balls, with 17 fours and a single six. After the mammoth partnership, the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Ajay Jadeja, and Robin Singh could not trouble the scorers. In the last over of the innings, Ganguly holed out to substitute fielder Upul Chandana in the long-off boundary off Pramodya Wickramasinghe. He scored 183 off 158 balls, comprising 17 fours and seven sixes, as the Indian team posted a humongous 373 on the board. In reply, Aravinda de Silva (56) and Arjuna Ranatunga (42) were the only notable contributors for Sri Lanka, as they fell short by 157 runs. All-rounder Singh picked up a five-wicket haul in the same match. After this victory, the Indian team won against England and sealed the place in the Super-6 stage. However, the team could not feature in the semi-finals.
