WI vs SA | 2nd T20I: Proteas look to bounce back after getting blanked by ruthless Windies in first game

The current T20Is taking place in the West Indies which would involve the Caribbean side locking horns with South African, Pakistani and Australian units are being seen as a dress rehearsal for the World Cup in October-November this year. In that regard, the humbling defeat that South Africa were subjected to in the first game of their 5-match series against the hosts was more than just a wake-up call for Mark Boucher and his men to get into their grooves before it is too late to recover.

While the batting of Temba Bavuma’s unit was still at par, it was the bowling that lacked discipline. They were simply all over, so much so that the Windies chased down 161 in just 15 overs. There seemed to be no plan against the likes of Andre Russell and Chris Gayle, two stalwarts of the T20 format. Even when the entire world knows that short balls and wide yorkers are their weak points, South Africa decide that was a good day to forget that plan.

The West Indies on their part were quite professional in all departments, be it batting or bowling and even in the field, letting no chance slip away at all, apart from a few errors in the field. Evin Lewis and Andre Fletcher, the two openers looked in supreme touch and then Gayle and Russell did the rest. The chase looked more like a statement to the rest of the world, ‘watch out, we are coming to defend the title’.

For South Africa to make a comeback, they need to get in a plan and follow that. Moreover, they don’t have any genuine off-spinner in the side which is a problem against a left hand heavy West Indies batting lineup. But with the resources that they have, they got to back them and Temba Bavuma needs to lead by example if the team is going to get any success.

Pitch Report

The pitch in the first game was absolutely terrific with the ball coming on the ball very nicely. A batting-friendly wicket predominantly, it also had something for the bowlers if the change of pace was applied with precision as was demonstrated by DJ Bravo and Russell.

Weather and Toss

The conditions are going to be extremely humid and there are slight chances of rain early in the match. The toss would be crucial as the team winning it would look to chase.

Team News

West Indies

The openers did fantastically well and thus not playing Lendl Simmons did not turn out to be any bad decision. Whether Pollard would go with the same team is yet to be seen. Obed McCoy was great with the ball too, hence chances of a Fidel Edwards come back into the side are slim as well. More or less the same unit will be playing this game as well.

Probable XI

Evin Lewis, Andre Fletcher, Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran(w), Kieron Pollard(c), Andre Russell, Jason Holder, Dwayne Bravo, Fabian Allen, Obed McCoy, Kevin Sinclair

South Africa

For the Proteas, it is a catch 22 situation, if they change the team right now, it would be too early as just by the performance of one game, the talent of a player cannot be determined. Bit if the same team plays and loses again, then changing it in the do or die third game of the series would be too late as well. Honestly, the only change they can make is to play another fast bowler in place of Linde, most probably Andile Phehlukwayo.

Probable XI

Reeza Hendricks, Quinton de Kock(w), Temba Bavuma(c), Rassie van der Dussen, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi, Lungi Ngidi

Dream XI / Fantasy XI team

Evin Lewis, Chris Gayle, Quinton de Kock(wk) (vc), Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Andre Russell (c), Jason Holder, Dwayne Bravo, Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi, Kevin Sinclair

With long term prospects in mind, BCB hands Rangana Herath, Ashwell Prince short term coaching stints

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has appointed former Sri Lanka left-arm spinner Rangana Herath and former South Africa Test batsman Ashwell Pince as short term bowling and batting consultants. While Herath will remain with the team till T20 World Cup, Prince’s assignment is right now limited to the team’s Zimbabwe tour. The two of them will assist head coach Russell Domingo. "We discussed Ashwell Prince's appointment with coach Russell Domingo who rates him highly," Akram Khan, BCB cricket operations head was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz. "He will be with us during the Zimbabwe tour, after which we will decide. Herath will be with us till the World Cup T20. If things go well, we will think about them as long-term options,” he added. While Prince has been coaching South Africa’s domestic side Cape Cobras since 2016 and has been associated with the Proreas’ A side in the capacity of the interim head coach and batting consultant, for Herath this is a first tie opportunity at coaching. The 44-year-old Prince played 66 Tess, 52 ODIs and a solitary T20I for South Africa while appearing in more than 288 First-Class games across his home nation and England. Herath, 43, retired in 2018, before scalping 433 Test wickets, most for a left-arm spinner in the history of the game. Prince will be the third South African in Bangladesh's coaching staff along with Domingo and fielding coach Ryan Cook. West Indies' Otis Gibson is the Tigers' fast bowling coach. Prince and Herath will be travelling to Zimbabwe with the team next week. On the tour, the team will play one Test, three ODIs and three T20Is, starting with the Test at Harare from July 7 onwards.

The phone keeps buzzing: Neil Wagner ultimate career win in WTC win is yet to sink in

Neil Wagner and BJ Watling were the two players for whom appearing in World Cup or ICC event was a dream that would have remained unfulfilled if not for the World Test Championship. And Wagner in particular hasn’t let that winning feeling sunk in just as yet. For him, winning the Championship was the ultimate achievement in his career. "I can't speak for everyone, this is the ultimate for me to win a Test Championship Final though it's the first one and probably hard to compare with others, it's definitely the pinnacle of the game for me,” he was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz. "The support back home and support that was around there - the text messages keep flowing in, the phone keeps buzzing and to see what it has meant for Kiwi supporters and family and friends, means a lot to us too. So, it's definitely right up there,” he added. The 35-year-old said that he never dreamt of playing an ICC Final, especially as he was not a part of New Zealand’s limited-overs scheme of things. "[I had] never [dreamt of it]. That was sort of a dream and a ship that had sailed to be fair - thinking about the white-ball World Cup in some sort of a way,’ he said. But the announcement of WTC in 2019 got the 54 Test veteran excited as he saw a slight window of opportunity of playing in a World event finally. “I thought it was quite special and I thought it was something that's going to make Test cricket the way it is right now and make it quite exciting and add a bit more perspective to it,” said the holder of 229 Test wickets. The Northern districts player is not anywhere near to quitting as he wants to keep on playing with the amount of energy he has left in the tank even at this age. "Age is just a number for me personally. It's not always going to have the glory numbers or the wickets or whatever it is, but I've got a role I can fulfil for the team and as long as I'm needed or called upon, or I guess asked to do a job, 100% I'll be there to contribute,” he said. "If anything this [WTC title] has just urged me on to work harder,” he added.
