WI vs ENG | 2nd T20I: England level series after high voltage drama

West Indies and England were involved in a high voltage drama in Barbados during the second T20I. Needing 30 in the final over while chasing 172 in 20 overs, the Caribbean side managed to gather 28 and lost the match by just one run eventually.

The home side didn't really have a great start to the chase and lost wickets at regular intervals to be left tottering at 98/8 in the 16th over.

It was then that Romario Shepherd and Akeal Hosein tried to steady the ship and built an unbeaten stand of 72 runs. But their efforts were not enough to take the side over the line as West Indies could only manage to get to 170/8.

While Shepherd scored 44* off 28, Hosein remained unbeaten at 44 off 16.

Moeen Ali returned with figures of 3/24 in 4 overs for England while Adil Rashid had a couple of wickets to his name for 24 runs in his 4 overs. Reece Topley also bowled with some impressive figures as he only gave 18 runs and had a scalp to his name in 4 overs.

Earlier, in the day, England rode on some good batting from Jason Roy and Moeen Ali and a late surge from Chris Jordan to put 171/8 in 20 overs on the board.

Roy struck 45 off 31 while Moeen scored a 24-ball 31. Jordan chipped in with a valuable contribution of 27 off 15 deliveries for his side.

Akeal Hosein returned with economic figures with 1/15 in three overs for West Indies during the course.

The series is presently leveled at 1-1 with the third encounter scheduled to take place on January 27, 2022 (1: 30 AM (IST)) in Barbados.

The third and final ODI between India and South Africa in Cape Town turned out to be a thrilling one after Deepak Chahar played a blinder of an innings as he notched up 54 off 34 deliveries during the 288-run chase. The home side was tottering at 223/7 when Chahar joined hands with Jasprit Bumrah and kept the visitors in the hunt. The two batters stitched a partnership of 55 runs for the 8th wicket before Chahar departed after being caught by Pretorious off Lungi Ngidi. The tailenders eventually failed to take the side over the line as India were bowled out for 283 to lose the match by 4 runs. Earlier, India lost stand-in captain KL Rahul early in the chase but the experienced lads Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli provided the resistance with a 98-run stand for the second wicket. Both the batters struck individual fifties but the South African bowlers were able to dominate the Indian batting unit in the middle overs as they got crucial wickets at regular intervals. Ngidi and Andile Phehlukwayo scalped three wickets each for the Proteas. Rahul had opted to bowl first after winning the toss and the bowlers responded pretty well as they picked up wickets at regular succession to the hosts to 70/3. But a batting masterclass from Quinton de Kock and some brilliance from van der Dussen turned the tables for them. The two batsmen put up a partnership of 144 runs for the fourth wicket. De Kock went on to score a hundred while van der Dussen struck 52 off 59. The hosts then lost the way in the middle a bit but David Miller (39 off 38) and Pretorious (20 off 25) made valuable contributions to help the side put 287 on the board. Prasidh Krishna who played his first match of the series bagged three wickets for 59 runs while Chahar and Bumrah had a couple of scalps to their names. With this win, South Africa completed a 3-0 clean sweep victory against India in the ODI fixtures.

India were left in a spot of bother against South Africa in the third ODI in Cape Town. Chasing 288 in 50 overs, the visitors were steady during the course after Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan had put up a partnership of 98 runs for the second wicket. But Dhawan's departure for a 73-ball 61 broke the shackles and his dismissal was followed by Rishabh Pant's wicket who was dismissed for a golden duck by Phelukwayo leaving India at 118/3. Later, Kohli who eventually got another fifty was joined by Shreyas Iyer and the two tried to steady the ship for the side. At the time of writing India were 147/3, needing another 141 to win the match. The home side has already taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series after clinching wins in the first two games.

It was the same old script for the Netherlands as they lost the second game in a row to concede an unassailable lead to Afghanistan in the three-match ODI series going on between the two teams in Doha, Qatar. In fact, the partnership turned out to be a bane in the larger context of the game as the players coming after the fall of de Leede were always under the pressure of scoring at more than run a ball. Edwards, who hit yet another fifty and improved his career-best once again, missed out on an opportunity to score his first hundred as he got out for 86 off 120 balls. With the fall of his wicket, the fourth overall of the team at 147 with 91 required from 66 balls, the chances of a Dutch comeback also dwindled to its lowest before falling flat completely. The team was eventually bowed out for 189, a three-run improvement from the previous game, losing the match by 48 runs and eventually losing the series too. Earlier in the day, after winning the toss and deciding t bat first, Afghanistan rode on the back of a brilliant century by Rahmanullah Gurbaz. The opening batter scored 103 off 127 balls and was helped by important innings of 54 from captain Hashmatullah Shahidi and 35 from Rahmat Shah to take the team to 237-6 eventually. The third and final game of the series will be played on Tuesday, January 25 at the same venue. No team would take that game lightly as it contains important 10 points for the Super League.
