Bangladesh spin-bowling all-rounder Mehidy Hasan has played down Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka's statement regarding Afghanistan being a superior opponent as opposed to the Asian Tigers.

Following a 9-wicket hammering at the hands of Afghanistan in their opening fixture of the ongoing Asia Cup, Shanaka stated in the press conference that Bangladesh will be an easier opponent to face as compared to Afghanistan as the latter boasts of a world-class attack.

Reacting to the same, Mehidy Hasan said that his team will respond to the statement with their on-field performance.

What Mehidy Hasan had to say

"I don't want to make a comment that this team is good and this team is bad. I think good and bad are proved in the field. A good team can lose if they play badly on that specific day and similarly a bad team can win if they play a good game of cricket.

"We will meet in the field and at that end of the day the good team will win the match and what I feel is that we have to prove it in the field because if we play well certainly everyone will know who is a good team and who is a bad team so instead of predicting before I think it is important to play well on the field,'' he added.

Can Bangladesh revive their fortunes in the Asia Cup?

Bangladesh will open their Asia Cup campaign against Afghanistan in Sharjah on Tuesday, August 30th.

The Shakib Al Hasan-led unit will then square off against Sri Lanka in Dubai on September 01 in what could prove to be a virtual eliminator for both sides.

But, first things first, Bangladesh will look to get off to a winning start against a high-flying Afghan unit.

T20 has been Bangladesh's least favoured format and over the course of the last 20 months, they have hit new lows in this format of the game.

They come into this tournament on the back of humiliating series defeats in the Caribbean and in Zimbabwe, and with the T20I World Cup Qualifiers just over a month away, the Asia Cup is an ideal opportunity for Shakib & co to start afresh.
