Umran Malik to stay with Team India as net bowler during World T20: Report

Young pace sensation Umran Malik, who caught everyone’s attention in his brief appearance in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League has also attracted attention from the Indian team.

As per a Cricbuzz report, Umran has been asked to stay back in the UAE as a net bowler for the Virat Kohli-led side during the T20 World Cup scheduled to start right after the IPL 2021.

He was called up by the Sunrisers Hyderabad team as the replacement for T Natarajan, who had contracted Covid-19 before the UAE leg of the tournament.

He rose to prominence with the raw pace and ability to extract bounce off the surface.

He was rated very highly by the SRH management and international stars such as Kane Williamson and Jason Holder have already showered praise on him and called him “special talent”.

After the game against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Virat Kohli too recognised his potential and highlighted the need to maximise it in the near future. 

"This tournament throws up talent every year, good to see a guy bowling at 150 clicks [on Umran Malik]. It is important to understand the progress of individuals from hereon. The pool of fast bowlers being strong is always a good sign for Indian cricket and whenever you see talent like this, you are going to have your eyes on them and make sure you maximise their potential which is already being seen at the IPL level," Kohli had said after the match.

An entry into the Indian set up albeit as a net bowler augurs well for the Jammu Kashmir pacer as there can be numerous opportunities arising from nowhere in current circumstances with respect to Covid-19 and subsequent biosecure bubble provisions.

The Chitwan Tigers defeated the Pokhara Rhinos by four wickets in the final and won the fourth edition of the Everest Premier League in Kirtipur. Chasing a low target of 112 runs, the Tigers got off to a horrible start with Hasim Ansari and Karim Janat getting out for ducks. Earlier in the day, the Tigers won the toss and asked the Rhinos to bat first. They got off to a decent start with the opening pair of Richard Levi and Bipin Rawal going hard at the bowlers. However, after the opening pair went back to the pavilion by the end of the fifth over, Sahan Arachchige and Rit Gautam went quickly to put the Rhinos under pressure before the skipper Binod Bhandari and Asela Gunaratne steadied the ship. Their partnership was followed by another collapse and the Rhinos were pushed to the brink by the end of the first half of the game. From the Tigers’ side, Nepal’s pacer Kamal Airee and Sri Lankan leg spinner Seekkuge Prasanna were the pick of the bowlers as they picked four and two wickets respectively. Both the Man of the Match and the Man of the Series went to the Tigers’ players as Kamal Aire was adjudged Man of the Match of the final while Sagar Dhakal was awarded the Man of the Series award.

Flamboyant batsman Ishan Kishan, who blasted a 32-ball 84 in the last game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, said that the Indian captain Virat Kohli had given him clarity on the role the team expects him to play in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Kishan was going through a horrendous run of form with the bat in the initial phase of the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League before coming back to his dominant best in the last two games of the season. In mid of that poor form, he was seen having an emotional and candid conversation with Kohli after the game against the Royal Challengers Bangalore and now he has said about the conversation between the two. He called his return to form a win-win situation for both himself and the team going into the big global event after becoming the man of the match against the Sunrisers. "I would love to open, and that is what Virat Bhai said. But at the bigger level, you need to be prepared for everything. A very good thing for me as well as for the team. Getting in good touch before the World Cup,” Kishan said after the game. Kishan made his international debut against England at the start of this year and announced his arrival on the big stage with an explosive innings against Eoin Morgan’s men. His form will be crucial for India in the T20 World Cup as he, along with the likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya will form the core of an aggressive batting unit.

Australia women’s team player Tahlia McGrath was the star in the home side’s win in the second T20I of the three-match series against India in Queensland. McGrath came into bat when Australia were struggling at 46/4 while chasing a target of 119 runs. The Indian bowlers had picked up some early wickets and the hosts were on the back foot when McGrath took the onus on herself and steadied the ship for the side. She first stitched a partnership of 23 runs with Nicola Carey for the sixth wicket and then put an unbeaten stand of 25 runs with Georgia Wareham to anchor the side home by 4 wickets. For India, Rajeshwari Gayakwad picked up a three-wicket haul for 21 runs in 4 overs while Shikha Pandey, Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma scalped a wicket apiece for the side. Earlier, in the day, India suffered a major batting collapse after they lost a couple of early wickets with both the openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma back in the hut. Jemimah Rodrigues who was the highest scorer in the last match followed soon as the visitors kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were left tottering at 81/9. It was Pooja Vastrakar’s 26-ball 37* cameo that helped India put up some score on the board. Apart from her, captain Harmanpreet Kaur scored 28 off 20. Vlaeminck and Molineux picked up a couple of wickets each. India captain Kaur admitted that the side was around 20 runs short but also added that the track wasn’t an easy one to bat on. “We were 20 runs short, but the wicket wasn't an easy one to bat on. We had a good game. We didn't give them easy runs. We fought till the end. Would want to take the team to take more responsibility,” she said. Australia skipper Meg Lanning lauded McGrath for the way she played in this match. “We bowled better. I think it was our best performance with the ball in the series. Tahlia McGrath was wonderful and helped us. Fair bit of swing around. But then it gets the bowlers in the game, and that makes it exciting,” she said. The two teams will now lock horns in the final T20I on Sunday.
