South African seam-bowling all-rounder Marizanne Kapp's ultimate wish is to win the World Cup for her country. Kapp has featured in as many as four 50-over World Cups and multiple T20 WC, but the dream to claim the title has eluded her and the Proteas.
She was a part of the recent campaign in New Zealand, where South Africa performed exceedingly well, only to lose to eventual runners-up England in the semi-finals.
The all-rounder opened up on her ultimate dream during an exclusive interview with the Scroll. She said,
"Ultimately, it will still be to win the World Cup. If someone can achieve that..., especially the way we kind of 'found' it in South Africa. It wasn't really on the map, so to be able to play for the South African team and win a World Cup. We haven't won one at this stage, so for a women's team to win that will be the ultimate goal for me,"
Kapp had a memorable World Cup campaign as a player. She racked up 203 runs in eight games at an average of 40.60, besides claiming 12 wickets at an economy rate of 4.73.
Kapp had many moments to savour from her World Cup campaign. But, she opted for the latter when it came to choosing between the five-wicket-haul she took against England and an unbeaten 34 (35) in a thrilling run-chase against the hosts.
"The cameo against New Zealand was my favourite. It was a lot of pressure. I'm glad it went my way and my team's way. It's funny to put it in words because we were cruising in that game with Wolvie (Laura Wolvaardt) and Sune Luus having quite a big partnership and a few wickets in hand. But again, that's cricket, and it can change with even one ball. Then, in the last ten overs, we needed about sixty runs, and we took it as deep as possible,"
Kapp is currently featuring in Dubai's inaugural Fairbreak Invitational Women's T20.
