The Hundred | Team Preview: Superchargers need others to fill big boots of Stokes, Alyssa Healy,

The Nothern Superchargers don’t have an extensive list of world-beating cricketers and more so, they will be without their biggest match-winner in the inaugural edition of The Hundred. However, what they certainly have are the cricketers who know how to get the get required job done.

Their skipper Faf du Plessis does not have a reputation like the skippers of the current generation have but he certainly has an astute mind which he has proven over a long period of time in international cricket. Also, he has been there and done the role of an enforcer at the top of the order for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League and the job would be no different when he will walk out to bat for the Superchargers.

The spin twins of Adil Rashid and Mujeeb ur Rahman can’t be rated on the standards of Imran Tahir, Sunil Narine or Rashid Khan, but nonetheless, they have been the effective weapons of choice of their respective side at the international level for some time.

Northern Superchargers Men Squad

Big players: Faf du Plessis, Ben Stokes, Chris Lynn, Adil Rashid

Mujeeb Ur Rahman, David Willey, Adam Lyth, Brydon Carse, Harry Brook, Matthew Fisher, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Callum Parkinson, Matthew Potts, Ben Raine, John Simpson, Jordan Thompson

Head coach: Darren Lehmann

The Ben Stokes factor

Ben Stokes will return to charge the Superchargers but not for long as he has been recalled in the Test squad for the home series against India. He will play only two games for the Superchargers and things could not have gone far worse than that for them as they will be losing one of the biggest matchwinners of the current generation.

The presence of Stokes in the middle order for the entire tournament would have given the batting lineup much impetus and a lot of freedom to the likes of Faf du Plessis to bat freely at the top of the order.

England-heavy side

A lot of Superchargers’ fortune will be dependent on their overseas stars such as Chris Lynn, du Plessis, Mujeeb ur Rahman, but the core of the team is built around English talents.

Yorkshire’s Harry Brook has had a dream run of form in the England domestic T20 competition and along with the experienced Adam Lyth can provide enough backbone to the bating group once Stokes will leave.

The bowling department will be spearheaded by David Willey, who has earned a recent callback from the England white-ball side and Adil Rashid—Eoin Morgan’s go-to spinner in the white-ball formats.

An emerging all-rounder, Brydon Carse, who has enhanced his reputation in the just-concluded ODI series against England will try to maximise the batting at the lower order and strengthening the bowling attack with his accurate seam bowling.

Chance of lifting the title

Although the Superchargers have promising depth in both the bowling and batting department, they lack the cutting edge competency from the outset to lift the trophy.

They would miss Stokes dearly and his presence would have made a major difference in their fortunes.

Probable XI

Faf du Plessis (C), Ben Stokes, Chris Lynn, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, John Simpson (WK), Ben Raine, David Willey, Adil Rashid, Brydon Carse, Matt Potts, Mujeeb Ur Rahman

Norther Superchargers Women’s squad

Hollie Armitage, Ami Campbell, Laura Kimmince, Jemimah Rodrigues, Lauren Winfield-Hill, Laura Wolvaardt, Alice Davidson-Richards, Phoebe Graham, Sterre Kalis, Kalea Moore, Bess Heath, Beth Langston, Helen Fenby, Katie Levick, Linsey Smith

Big players: Jemimah Rodrigues,

Captain: Lauren Winfield-Hill

Alyssa Healy's absence

The absence of the superstar Australian will be surely be felt on the strength of the Superchargers Women squad, at least from the outset. However, they will have the luxury of having Lauren Winfield-Hill, who has been in the form of her life in the past few months as the leader of the pack.

The Superchargers Women will also be buoyant about the presence of Jemimah Rodriques, who has been one of the most enterprising women cricketers across the world. The Superchargers Women will be a bit wiery of her form though.

They also replaced Healy with South African Laura Wolvaardt and they will bank on her to provide substance with the bat.

Chance of lifting the title

Like the Superchargers Men, the Women too lack the firepower to go all the way. However, they would bank on experienced and in-form players to raise their game to compensate for the absence of X-factor players such as Healy.

Probable XI

Lauren Winfield-Hill, Laura Wolvaardt, Jemimah Rodrigues, Laura Kimmince, Hollie Armitage, Sterre Kalis, Bess Heath (WK), Kalea Moore, Linsey Smith, Beth Langston, Katie Levick

Virat Kohli recovers from back pain, sweats it out on centre wicket in Durham

Team India skipper Virat Kohli who had to skip the three day first-class match against a Select County XI sweated it out in the nets during the lunch break on Day 2 of the three day match. Kohli was seen batting at the centre wicket and trying to get back to his rhythm. He had Washington Sundar by his company who is playing for the County XI in this encounter. As per reports both Kohli and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane were nursing minor niggles and the team management decided not to risk them ahead of a gruelling summer of five Test matches against a strong England side. Kohli had two totally contrasting seasons in England in 2014 and 2018. The Indian skipper struggled all through the 2014 series scoring just 134 runs in 10 innings. He went back to the drawing board and came back in 2018 as a totally different player and went onto finish the series as the leading run-scorer among both sides by quite a fair distance. He smashed a couple of centuries and as many fifties as India went down 1-4 in the five-match series. Coming back to the three day warm-up game, India managed to score 311 in the first innings after stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat. Mayank Agarwal who is vying to make a comeback in the absence of Shubman Gill played some delightful shots before both the openers perished. It was a sensational partnership between KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja for the 6th wicket which steadied the ship for India. Rahul who was batting at No 5 scored a magnificent century before retiring in order to give some much-needed batting practice to the lower order. The Indian pace attack began strongly and have taken three breakthroughs already. When the piece was writte, the County XI had lost 3 wickets for 44 runs with Haseeb Hameed and skipper Will Rhodes at the crease.

The Hundred | Team Preview: Oval Invincibles look to go all guns blazing

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has come up with a unique idea of this format of the game ‘The Hundred’. The women’s tournament is slated to begin on July 21 while the men’s competition commences on July 22. The new version will have some interesting features such as a five-ball over, 25-ball Powerplay and much more. The inaugural edition of the tournament begins with the Oval Invincibles women’s team taking on Manchester Originals at The Oval. Oval’s men’s side suffered a blow ahead of the tournament when Nepal’s Sandeep Lamichhane had to opt out of the tournament after he could not complete the procedures required to compete in the tournament even after reaching England. “I am extremely gutted for missing out on The Hundred. I was so looking forward to play for my team Oval Invincibles and followed all the instructions that was given to me by the ECB officials,” Sandeep said in a Facebook post on his timeline. “I came in the UK by July 9, had no issues whatsoever at the immigration and moved into the government managed quarantine facility to complete my quarantine. On July 18, two days before my quarantine completion, I was told by ECB that my visa is not valid and I have to leave the country ASAP.” “I have been asking what went wrong but apparently no one at the ECB have the correct answer. I can totally understand that things can go south at anytime, however I at least deserve a clear answer on why my valid visa is not valid anymore,” said Sandeep Here we take a look at Oval’s squads and what they have in the kitty. Oval Invincibles men’s squad Sam Billings, Alex Blake, Rory Burns, Jordan Clark, Jordan Cox, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Laurie Evans, Brandon Glover, Colin Ingram (South Africa), Will Jacks, Saqib Mahmood, Sunil Narine (West Indies), Jason Roy, Tabraiz Shamsi (South Africa), Nathan Sowter, Reece Topley Coach: Tom Moody Banking on Big guns Oval Invincibles seem to have one of the strongest squads in the competition. They have some names in the ranks who can win games single-handedly on their day. In the first place, the presence of Sam Curran in the squad brings a lot of stability in the side both with the ball and the bat. The youngster has the ability to pick up wickets at crucial stages while can play a handy role with the bat too down the order. The left-hander has unveiled some instances of this in the IPL for CSK as well as for his national side. One major aspect of his batting that will surely suit this kind of format is that Curran doesn’t really take much time in getting his eye in. He can increase the scoring rate at any given stage which plays a crucial role for his side. Apart from Sam, the likes of Jason Roy, Sunil Narine, Colin Ingram, Rory Burns and Sam Billings are some of the prominent faces in the side. While Roy has the ability to give a brisk start to the team, Ingram and Billings can capitalise on that in the later part of the game. West Indies Sunil Narine is another member in the squad who has been pretty handy with the bat for the T20 franchises that he has played especially while opening the innings and has stamped his authority with the ball at the highest level and can deceive any batsman. The skipper would be looking to use his services in the middle overs to restrict the opposition to a lesser total. Powerful bowling Well, if we take a glance at the bowling attack, the Oval team probably has one of the most stable bowling attacks. The unit comprises an efficient left-arm pacer, quick right-arm fast bowlers and experienced spinner. While Sam Curran can set up a batsman pretty well and scalp his wicket, Saqib Mahmood is quick enough to threaten the batsmen with his pace. He would try to pepper the batting attack with short deliveries. He is coming into the tournament on the back of some good performances against Pakistan for the national side and would be riding high on confidence. Narine as we talked about is someone who can deceive any batsmen and the right-arm spinner has shown this a number of times while playing for West Indies and in the T20 leagues. Chances of lifting the trophy The kind of steadiness that the Oval Invincibles side has, they can expect some fruitful results. The team has some of the finest players who have a lot of experience of playing all around the globe and that would essentially be helpful and bring positive results for them in this inaugural season. Probable XI Jason Roy, Will Jacks, Colin Ingram, Laurie Evans, Sam Billings (WK), Jordan Clark, Sam Curran (C), Tom Curran, Sunil Narine, Saqib Mahmood, Brandon Glover Oval Invincibles women’s squad Georgia Adams, Megan Belt, Sarah Bryce, Alice Capsey, Tash Farrant, Jo Gardner, Grace Gibbs, Eva Gray, Danielle Gregory, Shabnim Ismail (South Africa), Marizanne Kapp (South Africa), Rhianna Southby, Dane van Niekerk (South Africa), Mady Villiers, Fran Wilson Coach: Jonathan Batty Bowling heavy unit The Oval Invincibles women’s team have some world class bowlers in Marizanne Kapp, Dane van Niekerk and Shabnim Ismail who can help the side restrict the opposition to low scores. While Kapp’s pace bowling can give some tough time to the opponents, van Niekerk’s leg-spin will play an important role in the middle overs and would provide the team with some variety in the bowling. Talented youngster in the side Allrounder Alice Capsey who is 16-year-old would be the youngest player in The Hundred. She is known for her fielding abilities and can also score some runs which would eventually help the side. Chances of lifting the title With a mix of some experienced and young players, Oval Invincible look a steady side. They do have a chance of producing some positive results in the competition. Probable XI Georgia Adams, Sarah Bryce (wk), Fran Wilson, Dane van Niekerk, Marizanne Kapp, Mady Villiers, Alice Capsey, Shabnim Ismail, Tash Farrant, Jo Gardner and Grace Gibbs
