Taskin Ahmed picks playing for Bangladesh over IPL

Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed has said that him playing a stellar role in his side's historic ODI series win over South Africa has made up for the disappointment of missing out on playing the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The Lucknow Super Giants approached Ahmed as a replacement player for the injured Mark Wood, but he was denied a 'No Objection Certificate' from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

As it turned out, the right-arm pacer played a stellar role in Bangladesh's maiden ODI series win in South Africa. He finished the series as the leading wicket-taker- 8 wickets in three games at 14 apiece - including a five-for in the decider. Ahmed was later rightfully adjudged the 'Player of the Series'.

"Always wanted to contribute in wins against big sides. Want to keep contributing so that we can win more series going forward as a team," said Taskin, as quoted by the Daily Star.

"As a player, anyone would want to play in the IPL. Since, there was national duty at the time so there was nothing to do. The chance to play IPL arrived because I play for the country. The man of the series and the series win covers for that. If we can win the Test, then it will be even better," he added.

"There are no expectations (regarding call up for next IPL). If it happens, then it will, but if doesn't, it won't matter, but I want to play regularly for the country,"

Taskin carried his form in the first Test at Kingsmead but an unfortunate shoulder injury, he sustained during the first innings, ended his tour prematurely.

He returned to the field during South Africa's second innings despite a sore shoulder and bowled his heart out, a testament to his mental strength and the desire to perform for his side despite all the physical pain.

The Tigers, however, went down by 220 runs despite putting up a spirited show on the first four days. Nevertheless, Taskin is confident that his side will make a comeback in the second Test despite his and Shoriful Islam's absence.

"Things were going well till day four in the Test match, but we played a bit badly on day five. We're hopeful of something good in the second Test," said Taskin.

"I wanted to do better in the first Test since I was going to miss the next one. I was also a bit hurt, and it felt sad, but hopefully, I will be able to get back to the field soon," he said.

"There is no mystery. I am doing the hard work in the right way. I have worked really hard in the last two to two-half, and the pace unit is working really hard too," he added when asked about the secret behind his recent success.

The second Test will take place in Port Elizabeth on April 08.
