Suresh Raina retained by CSK

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have retained Suresh Raina. “Yes, we will retain Raina and Dhoni will be the captain. Apart from Harbhajan Singh, we might release a few more players,” the CSK official told The Indian Express.

According to the official there are few players who are going to be released. Earlier, spinner Harbhajan Singh confirmed that his contract with CSK is over. “As my contract comes to an end with

@ChennaiIPL, playing for this team was a great experience..beautiful memories made &some great friends which I will remember fondly for years to come..Thank you @ChennaiIPL, management, staff and fans for a wonderful 2years.. All the best..,” Harbhajan tweeted.

Raina had opted out of the IPL 2020 citing personal reasons. “As far as Suresh Raina is concerned, he is a great player who has done so much for CSK. We have a lot of respect for him. [We have] a lot of regard and affection for all that he has done. CSK will always stand by him,” Srinivasan told last year.

Raina has been the most successful player for CSK amassing 4,527 runs from 164 appearances for the franchise. The left-handed batsman had announced his retirement from international cricket alongside MS Dhoni on August 15 last year.

CSK is the second most successful franchise in the IPL and have lifted the trophy thrice. But it had a dismal run during the IPL 2020 when the side was knocked out in the group stage itself. This was the first instance when CSK failed to make a place in the play-offs.

There can be a huge fall out: Shane Warne after Australia's series loss

India defended the Border-Gavaskar trophy after beating Australia in the fourth and final Test in Brisbane. Former Aussie spinner Shane Warne feels that there cane be a “huge fallout” after the defeat in the Australian team. "I think there'll be a huge fallout from this. There's not too many times that you lose to the second or third (choice) side," Foxsports.com.au quoted Warne as saying. "That's not taking anything away from those Indian guys that played but their first selection side, there's probably only two or three players in that side who would play," he added. Warne further said that the bowling department’s performance will also come under scrutiny. "Their tactics will come into question, and they have to. Bowlers will come into question, people's spot in the team will come into question. It has to," said Warne. "You can't just deflect it and flick it off and say India were too good for us. Yes, they were, but Australia had so many chances in this series to bury it and crush India, but they couldn't do it. They just couldn't do it. There'll be a big fallout from this," the former spinner added. India were bundled out for 36 in second innings of the first Test while Australia completed the win by 8 wickets. But the visitors turned the fortunes for themselves in the second match and levelled the series. The third match ended in a draw, courtesy some heroics from Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant, R Ashwin and Hanuma Vihari. The two sides then met in Brisbane for the decided and India chased down a target of 328 by 3 wickets.

IPL retention day: CSK release Harbhajan Singh, other big releases may follow

Ahead of the big retention day for the next edition of the IPL this year, the Chennai Super Kings franchise has let go off spinner Harbhajan Singh. He was bought in the mega auction before the 2018 edition of the league for his base price of Rs 2 crore, but he opted out of the last edition played in the UAE citing personal reasons amid the rage of Coronavirus pandemic. Harbhajan took to his Twitter account to announce his separation from the franchise, and thanked support staff and team management for ‘wonderful 2 years’ with the side where he made ‘some great friends.’ The men in yellow need to restructure their team and hence there many more releases on cards before they announce the list of players they have retained.. Notably, they have the least amount of money left in their purse—Rs15 lakh to make their squad and hence letting go players who might not play a big role for them over the next three four seasons make sense. In all likelihood, players such as Piyush Chawla, Imran Tahir, Murali Vijay, and Dwayne Bravo may be shown the exit door as the franchise must be contemplating the idea of building a team from a base. Piyush Chawal was bought in the IPL 2018 auction for a hefty amount of Rs 6.75 crore in the auction before IPL 2020 but the leg spinner failed to leave his mark on the team’s fortunes and ended up making it into the playing XI in only seven matches. He could manage to pick up only nine wickets with a high economy rate of 9.09 runs per over. On the other hand, it will be a second departure for Vijay who had made his comeback in the franchise in the 2019 edition but he was horribly out of form in the three matches last season and may well be shown the exit door from the side.

Shahid Afridi lauds India for "incredible performance"

The Indian team has grabbed a lot of praise after pulling out a brilliant series win against Australia away from home. The visitors were set to chase a target of 328 runs in Brisbane and they did it with three wickets in hands, courtesy some fine and crucial knocks from Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant. Gill scored 91 while Pant remained unbeaten at 89 to take India home. Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has congratulated India for this “remarkable win”. "Incredible performance India! Despite so many injuries and setbacks India have pulled off an astonishing series win. Congratulations to Indian team, this series will be remembered for a long time," Afridi tweeted. India had lost the first match after getting bundled out for 36 in the second innings but levelled the series in the second clash after riding on a superb hundred from stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane in the first innings and some responsible knocks from Gill. The third Test ended in a draw but India had suffered some major injury blows till then. Ravindra Jadeja, Hanuma Vihari, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and KL Rahul had been ruled out of the fixtures while Jasprit Bumrah and R Ashwin weren’t fully fit to be a part of the XI for the decider. India made few more changes in this line up. Washington Sundar and T. Natarajan were given the Test caps while Shardul Thakur was also included as the third seamer. Mayank Agarwal replaced injured Vihari in the middle order. The Australian team batted first at the Gabba and posted 369 in the first innings. India in reply were left tottering at 186/6 when Sundar and Thatr joined hands and stitched a record stand of 123 runs for the seventh wicket. Both the players scored individual half-centuries to take India’s total to 336. The hosts then scored 294 to take a lead of 327 in the second innings. Mohammed Siraj picked up a fifer while Thakur bagged four wickets in the innings. India eventually won the match and the series to go at the helm of the WTC points table.
