Star India has asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) a discount of Rs.130 crore. The network holds the media rights for India’s home season, including domestic matches and tournaments organised by the Indian board.

In a virtual meeting conducted on Monday, January 9, the top BCCI officials had discussed about the same for nearly an hour.

Star India, Byju’s approaches BCCI amid hectic home season

Earlier, Star India had signed a deal with BCCI to bag international and domestic cricket rights for the 2018-2023 period. Despite finalising a deal, the network is now asking for a discount of Rs.130 crore.

It is to be noted that several of India’s international and domestic matches were either rescheduled or cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As of now, the BCCI is preparing to sell media rights for the next five-year cycle after their deal with Star India expires in March.

Apart from Star India, Team India’s outbound jersey sponsor Byju’s has also contacted the BCCI and asked the board to encash bank guarantee. As per the latest update, the edtech company wants the council to encash bank guarantee of worth Rs.140 crore.

Back in November 2022, Byju’s expressed their intentions with the BCCI of discontinuing as team’s jersey sponsor. However, the board asked them to continue at least until March 2023.
