Sri Lanka's skipper Dasun Shanaka eyes massive opportunity against inexperienced India

Sri Lanka have been on a downward trend for the last many years apart from some remarkable performances few and far in between but their new skipper Dasun Shanaka is very confident of his side’s chances in the series against India starting tomorrow in Colombo

Pointing out to the lack of international experience in the India side, who have landed in the island nation for a three-match ODI and an equally long T20 series under the leadership of Shikhar Dhawan, Shanaka said that both sides will start the series “evenly” and they have equal chances.

“Both teams will start evenly because even they have got new players coming up. We all know they (the Indian players) have played the IPL, but still (not many) have played international cricket. Both teams have even chances,” Shanaka said.

Moreover, he downplayed the lack of experience in his side after Sri Lanka named a quite inexperienced side to take on India. He said that the presence of rookies in the side makes India’s job difficult as they have not had the experience of playing against them.

“We will have a slight advantage because they have not seen these guys at the international level. I feel they have to prepare well for these youngsters,” Shanaka said.

However, he did not belittle the Indian side without many of their superstars and said that the series against them will be the one to give perfect exposure to Sri Lankan youngsters. He called India one of the top teams in the world for the level of cricket they have been playing and said that the home side will try to achieve as much as they can.

“The experience will be very good, playing against one of the top teams in the world. It will be very good to play against India at this point because we can access the levels we are in. It will be a good tournament for us,” Shanaka added.

Apart from the slide in on-field performances, Sri Lanka cricket has also captured headlines due to off-field issues such as players breaching Covid-19 protocols in England and a payment tussle between the board and players. However, Shanaka downplayed the effects of off-field matters on the performance of the players.

“It is always challenging. In international cricket, outside (off the field) issues do matter, but at the end of the day, we have to get there and perform as a team. That's the main concern we have. I am sure the boys will look on to it,” he said.

Shanaka has been appointed as the captain of the side for the ODI series against India in the absence of Kusal Perera, who has been ruled out due to an injury.

The ODI series between Sri Lanka and India is slated to start on July 18 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

WI vs AUS | Australia to monitor Finch's knee injury, Wade expresses 'love' for captaincy

Australia will monitor the knee injury of skipper Aaron Finch leading up to the ODI series against West Indies, ESPNcricinfo reported. Finch has twisted his knee in the fifth and final T20 of the series and hence his participation in the ODI series is doubtful. Finch has had a recurrent knee injury problem and as per the ESPNcricinfo report he had complained of a mild injury in the early part of the tour. However, he persisted in playing on for the entire series. In case Finch gets ruled out of the ODI series, Australia don’t have a designated vice-captain on the ongoing Caribbean tour as the vice-captain in all formats, Pat Cummins has not come on the tour. One most prominent member of the squad who can be tipped to lead the side could be Matthew Wade, who had led the side before in absence of Finch against India. Now, recalling his captaincy memory from the last summer, Wade has said that captaining the Australian international side has not been a difficult ask for him with the luxury of experienced players around him. He has also announced his eagerness to lead the side by saying that he would “love” to captain the side albeit conceding that it would be a massive turnaround in fortunes as he was not expecting to play the ODIs in the first place. "It's a bit of a moving thing, the vice-captaincy. Going forward in the one-dayers I have no idea what will happen there. I am probably not expecting to play, especially if Finchy plays, but if he doesn't there might be an opportunity for me to play,” Wade told cricket.com.au. "I came over here thinking I would play the T20s and I wouldn’t play the ODIs. I think some of the younger guys would get some opportunities to play them which is fair enough, I've been around a long time now. But if Finchy doesn't come up there might be an opportunity to play, so we'll wait and see." "I love to captain whenever I get an opportunity. I captained in the T20s (against India last summer), and we've got plenty of different leaders here. Moises is a really good leader, Adam Zampa is getting better and better, 'Starcy' and 'Hoff' (Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood) go about their thing. Captaining is pretty easy at this level with those experienced guys around so if I got the opportunity I'd jump at it." Matthew Wade made his ODI debut way back in 2012 and has played 94 ODIs with a mediocre average of 25.75 and a solitary hundred. The ODI series between West Indies and Australia will commence on July 21 in Barbados.

ENG vs PAK: Livingstone’s record hundred in vain as Pakistan register first win on England tour

It took Pakistan to score its highest ever total in T20Is to deny a rampant Liam Livingstone from snatching away a sensational victory for his team single-handedly. The Lancashire lad first scored the fastest fifty for England in T20Is, coming off just 17 balls and then converted it into the fastest hundred as he took 25 more balls to reach his hundred. He broke Dawid Malan’s record of 48 ball hundred. But all that wasn’t enough as Shadab Khan kept chipping away with wickets while Mohammad Hasnain and Shaheen Shah Afridi kept moving the required run rate higher than the scoring run rate with their tight bowling. Eventually, even after never bothering to slow down right from the start of their chase, England bundled out for 201 and lost the game by 31 runs. Along with Livingstone, Jason Roy (32 from 13 balls) was the only other English batter who seemed to have got going while the rest faltered after hitting a boundary or two. For the Men in Green though, apart from Shadab, Shaheen too took three wickets and gave away only 30 runs in his 3.2 overs to be named Man of the Match. Earlier in the day, Babar Azam was at his very best as the skipper carried his form from Birmingham to Nottingham, hitting 85 off just 49 balls to carry Pakistan to its highest ever T20I total. He got ample support from the likes of Mohamad Rizwan (63 off 41), Sohaib Maqsood (19 off 7), Fakhar Zaman (26 off 8) and Mohammad Hafeez (24 off 10) at the beginning and end of the innings as the hosts garnered 152 runs in the last 10 overs. Babar, who sounded frustrated in the three ODIs was happy with the win. Speaking in the post-match presentation, he said, “I spoke about not repeating the mistakes. In the T20s, you need to take quick decisions, you gotta enjoy your cricket. We gave 100% in all departments. We'll look to build on the momentum and continue playing the way we did.” English skipper Morgan, who experimented by resting a few of his main players like Adil Rashid, Chris Jordan and Jos Buttler, still chose to look at the positives from the game. He credited Livingstone for his brilliant performance and said that his side was on track for the T20 World Cup preparations. “There were a lot of positives, this ground replicates Sharjah where we might play World Cup games. It's good to be under pressure to find out more about the team. Liam, an incredible knock, over the last six years as a group we've watched incredible knocks from Buttler, Roy, Ali, that was as good as any of them," said the 34-year-old. The two teams would now travel to Headingley in Leeds for the second T20I on Sunday, July 18 with Pakistan looking to seal the series and compensate for the ODI horror show. England on the other hand would bank themselves to make a strong comeback.

Ben Stokes looks back on 'ridiculous pain' while leading England against Pakistan

England all-rounder Ben Stokes conceded that his finger has not healed perfectly and that he would not have come back so quickly into the England team in “normal circumstances”. Stokes was hurried back to lead the side against Pakistan in the aftermath of the Covid-19 crisis in England camp that forced the entire squad including the skipper, Eoin Morgan, into quarantine. Writing a column for The Daily Mail, Stokes has said that his finger has healed “structurally” but he had to endure all the “ridiculous pain” to lead the England team. "It was a totally unexpected set of games for me and the truth is I would never have played under normal circumstances due to how much pain I was in with my left index finger. The surgery was a success after I had broken it at the IPL, but it was still so painful,” Stokes wrote in his Daily Mirror column. "Sometimes though you just have to grin and bear it, and captaining England is one of those reasons. The finger has healed structurally, but the pain was just ridiculous for where it should be so that is why I have now had an injection to ease it for the rest of the summer. Stokes went back to rest while Morgan has returned to lead the side in the T20 series against Pakistan and the all-rounder has expressed hope that the pain will not come in between him and The Hundred. He also expressed “desperation” to do well against India in the series starting early next month and said that he hopes the pain will subside by the time series will start. "I've got a bit of a break now, which should give the steroids time to take effect and allow me to play pain-free in the Hundred and then against India. Hopefully, my finger won't be a problem by the time the India Test series comes around, because that is a huge series and one we are all desperate to perform well in,” Stokes added. Notably, Stokes had fractured his finger while fielding for the Rajasthan Royals in the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League earlier this year.
