Batter Smriti Mandhana became the first Indian women’s cricketer to score a Test century on Australian soil after she struck 127 in the first innings of the day-night Test between the two sides in Queensland on Friday.
India were 132/1 with Mandhana unbeaten at 80 and Punam Raut at 16* when the first day of the match was curtailed and the stumps were taken eventually.
The left-hander added 47 more runs to her innings before getting out to Ashleigh Gardner after being caught by Mcgrath when the team score read 195. Raut was the next one to go back in the hut for 36 after she was undone by Molineux.
India were still in a commanding position at 231/3 at the end of the first session on Day 2 with captain Mithali Raj unbeaten at 15 and debutant Yastika Bhatia at 2* at the crease.
Mandhana who struck 22 fours and a maximum during her innings expressed delight after scoring up a ton.
“Really happy that I finally I got through this 80s period, I keep getting out in 80s and 90s and really pleased to get the hundred. Obviously disappointed as you want to get as much as you can after being set but overall really happy. I like the ball coming onto the bat and short ball is something I look forward to and I'm happy they bowled short and whichever were in my zone, I had to go for it,” she said after her knock.
