Aiden Markram of South Africa was in a mode where it seemed like he would run away with the win easily against Sri Lanka in the first of the three ODIs at R Premadasa stadium in Colombo on Thursday, September 02. He was striking at more than a hundred and had already hit four sixes.
The Sri Lankan spinners weren’t really able to rein him in and if it wasn’t for a blinder of a catch by Wanindu Hasaranga in the 31st over, Markram was surely heading for a hundred and at the same taking South Africa to a win.
Courtesy of his wicket, the Lankan spinners got the spring back in their feet and weaved a web too hard for the rest of the Proteas batters to crawl out of and towards win as they fell short by 14 runs in the end to had the home team a much-deserved victory. The Lankan Lions now lead the three-match series 1-0.
Apart from Markram, Rassie van der Dussen hit run a ball 59, getting out to Akila Dananjaya trying to reverse sweep him to get quick runs in the wake of the rising required rate. Skipper Temba Bavuma got retired hurt after scoring 38 with a ball hitting his hands and causing immense pain. Apart from these three, Heinrich Klaasen got 36 off 31 while Janneman Malan hit 23. But all this wasn’t enough to propel the Proteas to win.
For Sri Lanka, Dananjaya picked two wickets while Praveen Jayawickrama and Hasaranga, the other two spinners got one each with one wicket going to Chamika Karunaratne. Klaasen was run out of the last delivery of the match.
Earlier in the day, Avishka Fernando scored his third century and Charith Asalanka scored 72 off 62 balls to push the team to 300-9 in their 50 overs.
