Shpageeza Cricket League 2022 | Yousuf Zazai, Mohammad Saleem showcase smearing bowling on Day 2

The 2nd day of the 2022 edition of the Shpageeza Cricket League saw two low-scoring fixtures, with seam bowlers dominating the proceedings.

In the end, Amo Sharks and Boost Defenders bagged their maiden points of the season at the expense of Hindukush Stars and Pamir Zalmi.

Amo Sharks vs Hindukush Stars, Match 03

A sensational 5-wicket haul from right-arm seamer Yousuf Zazai (5/18 in 4) helped Amo Sharks edge out the Hindukush Stars by 3 runs in a low-scoring thriller in Kabul.

Chasing 148, the Stars lost the post completely in the 18th over as they went from being 5-128 to 9-132 within a space of 6 deliveries thanks to Zazai.

With 16 needed in the last over, Nisar Wahdat (27* off 21) needed to nail at least 3 strikes but he could nail just one, handing the Sharks a 3-wicket victory.

Opener Usman Noori was the hero for the Hindukush. He smashed a whirlwind 38-ball 62 but he was heavily let down by his partners as they sucked the entire momentum of the innings.

Earlier, Amo Sharks rode on a 31-ball 44 from opener Ihsanullah Janat (44 off 31), an unbeaten 33-ball 36 from Abdul Wasi and useful knocks from Abidullah Taniwal (15 off 11) and Jamshid Khan (8 off 3) posted 147-7 in 20 overs.

Seamer Musa was the pick of the bowlers for Hindukush as he claimed 3 wickets for 23 in his 4 overs. But, unfortunately for him, it eventually proved to be inadequate in the end.

Brief Scores:

Amo Sharks 147-7 (20)

Ihsanullah Janat 44 (31), Abdul Wasi 36* (33);

Muslim Musa 3-23 (4)

Hindukush Stars 144-9 (20)

Usman Noori 62 (38), Nisar Wahdat 27* (21);

Yousuf Zazai 5-18 (4), Wafadar Momand 2-32 (4)

Pamir Zalmi vs Boost Defenders, Match 04

An all-round bowling performance-led by pacer Mohammad Saleem (2/18) and an unbeaten half-century from Hasmatullah Shahidi (58* off 50) on a tricky surface has helped Boost Defenders claim a six-wicket win over Pamir Zalmi.

Batting first, Zalmi's innings never really kicked on from 1st gear as their batters failed to adapt to the seamer-friendly conditions.

And, the Defenders' bowlers, especially Saleem, made merry! Barring opener Rahmat Shah (20 off 15), none of the other batters could strike at more than 100, with Ghamai Zadran leading the pack with a pain-staking 39-ball 34.

The discipline that Defenders' bowlers showed can be gauged from the fact that barring Ibrahim Safi (2-38 in 4), none of the other bowlers conceded more than 4.75 runs per over.

Fazalhaq Farooqi was the most economical among the lot as he gave away just 10 in his 4 but the pick of the bowlers was Saleem, who took two wickets at the expense of just 18.

Chasing 112, BD batters also struggled to bat freely, eventually taking 18.1 overs to overhaul the total.

But Hashmatullah Shahidi led the pack with a brilliantly composed 50-ball 58*. Farhan Zankhil (31 off 29) also chipped in with a handy contribution and the duo ensured that their side eventually claim their maiden points of the season.

Brief Scores:

Pamir Zalmi 107-8 (20)

Ghamal Zadran 34 (39), Rahmat Shah 20 (15);

Mohammad Saleem 2/18 (4), Ibrahim Safi 2/38 (4)

Boost Defenders 111-4 (18.1)

Hashmatullah Shahidi 58* (50), Farhan Zakhil 31 (29);

Sayed Shirzad 1/27 (3), Shapoor Zadran 1/25 (4)

Boost Defenders won by 4 wickets

Mark Wood responds to Ben Stokes' retirement from ODIs

England pacer Mark Wood has stated that he's 'sad' but not 'shocked' with Ben Stokes' decision to call it quits from One-Day Internationals (ODIs). On Monday, Stokes, 31, shocked the cricketing world when he announced that the 1st ODI against South Africa in Durham will be his last in 50-over cricket. In his statement, Stokes wrote that given the current scheduling, he cannot possibly commit to all three formats simultaneously and would instead invest all his energy while playing Tests and T20Is. Reacting to Stokes' decision ahead of the 1st ODI against the Proteas, Wood said that while he is sad, he understands the marquee all-rounder's decision as it is inconceivable at this point to commit to everything. Also Read: Sunil Gavaskar positive about helping Virat Kohli "It honestly has. I was a bit sad to be honest more than anything. I won't say "shocked" because with the schedule, the way it is, you just can't do everything. I was shocked because I spoke to him in the morning because he didn't tell me, he told me later on. I'm just sad," Wood told Sky Sports. Stokes will always be remembered for his match-winning performance in the 2019 ODI World Cup final, where he scored an unbeaten 84 against New Zealand to enforce a Super Over, which England won via boundary count. ‘In the dressing room, he looks after people’- Wood on Stokes Stokes has scored close to 3000 ODI runs besides taking 74 wickets. But, according to Wood, more than Stokes' numbers, it's his presence in the dressing room and his leadership persona that England will miss the most. Also Read: Wood ruled out of English summer, eyes T20 WC 2022 for comeback "People in that dressing room still look up to Stokesy. He cares about everyone in that dressing room. He makes sure everyone is alright, puts an arm around them. You may not see it on the field, but definitely, in the dressing room, he looks after people. He is a big miss from that point of view. He is a leader, a natural leader. He will be a big miss not just from stats point-of-view but from who he is in the dressing room," he said. Meanwhile, South Africa are going along nicely in the ongoing Durham ODI. At the time of writing, South Africa posted 333 in their inning, losing five wickets in the process. Stokes will look to play a match-winning knock and bow out on a high.
