  • Shelley Nitschke Named Australias Interim Coach Replacing Outbound Matthew Mott

Shelley Nitschke named Australia's interim coach, replacing outbound Matthew Mott

Former Australian cricketer Shelley Nitschke is set to take over the coaching role of Australia's women's team. She will be replacing outbound Matthew Mott who resigned from his seven-year-old job for England's white-ball duties.

Nitschke's appointment as Australian women's interim coach was announced on Wednesday, May 18, i.e., shortly after Mott was named England men's limited-overs coach.

Nitschke's initial assignment includes Commonwealth Games

The Adelaide-born was already serving as an assistant coach of the Australian women's team since 2018. Her newfound interim role will give Cricket Australia (CA) enough time to hunt for a new full-time coach.

Shelley Nitschke's first coaching assignment includes a tri-series in Ireland, set to be played in July, this year. The tri-series will feature Pakistan as the third side. Immediately after the tri-nation contest, Nitschke will be helming her side at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The Commonwealth Games will feature a women's T20I tournament between eight sides. Australian women are placed in Group A alongside India, Pakistan and Barbados.

Nitschke's career and coaching record

The Belinda Clark Award winner represented the Australian women's side in six Tests, 80 ODIs and 36 T20I matches. She was part of the undefeated Australian squadron that lifted the 2005 Women's World Cup in South Africa.

While Nitschke was appointed as the assistant coach of the Australian women's team in 2018, she has previously spent time with Adelaide Strikers and South Australia. Moreover, she took over the coaching role of Perth Scorchers in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) in 2019 and led them to their maiden title in the 2021-22 season.

PCB accepts NZC's invitation to play a T20I Tri-series in New Zealand

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has given the green signal to the proposal of playing a tri-nation series in New Zealand before the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year. According to a report published in Cricket Pakistan, a senior PCB official confirmed to the Express that the Babar Azam-led unit would compete in the tri-series as it will help them prepare better for the marquee T20 event. The New Zealand Cricket Board (NZC) initiated the proposal for the same during an ICC conference last week. The two-member nations who were offered the invitation were Pakistan and Bangladesh. While the dates for the tri-series are yet to be decided, a window in late September and early October is set to be chalked out. It will be the first time that a T20I triangular competition between full-member nations will take place since 2018. Back in 2018, Australia, New Zealand and England participated in a Trans-Tasman T20I series. During the same year, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka featured in the Nidahas Trophy to commemorate 70 years of Sri Lankan independence. Pakistan also featured in a tri-series that year involving hosts Zimbabwe and Australia, which the Sarfaraz Ahmed-led unit eventually won by beating the Aussies in the summit clash. Pakistan's acceptance of New Zealand's proposal comes at a time when the relations between the two boards aren't ideal. The relations took a nosedive last autumn when New Zealand backed out of their tour of the Asian country on the eve of the first ODI, citing security issues. However, the Kiwis will be back in Pakistan for a full tour later this year. Pakistan and New Zealand were a part of the same group in last year's T20 World Cup. The Babar Azam-led unit emerged victorious in that encounter, but New Zealand had the final laugh as they made their way to the final, while Pakistan could only go as far as the semi-finals.
