Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur has been appointed as Mumbai captain for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025-26 season. The cricketer was also named Mumbai captain in first-class cricket after senior pro Ajinkya Rahane stepped down the leadership role prior to the ongoing 2025-26 Ranji Trophy.

The Mumbai cricket team will start out as defending champions in the upcoming 50-overs event, considering they won the 2024-25 edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy late last year by thrashing Madhya Pradesh in the final, doing so under the leadership of Indian international and charismatic batter Shreyas Iyer.

Shardul Thakur replaces Shreyas Iyer as Mumbai captain

As reported by a Times of India editor, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has named a 17-player Mumbai squad for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025-26 season. In a major development, all-rounder Shardul Thakur was named Mumbai’s white-ball captain considering regular skipper Shreyas Iyer suffered a spleen injury in Australia a few weeks ago.

Angkrish Raghuvanshi was named as Mumbai’s primary wicketkeeper-batter, and the team also features several other star attractions in the form of international giants Ajinkya Rahane, Shivam Dube, national T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, Sarfaraz Khan and teenage sensation Ayush Mhatre among others. Here is a look at the entire Mumbai squad for the upcoming 2025-26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy season:
