Senior Women’s T20 League | Pre-Quarter Finals Round-Up

Second-placed teams of the respective Elite Groups and the Plate Group qualifier featured in the Pre-quarter finals on 28 April. Shafali Verma and Harleen Deol emerged as the all-round stars for their respective teams in Surat.

HP hold their nerves to knock Goa out of the tournament

Deol’s unbeaten knock of 84 helped Himachal Pradesh progress to the quarter-finals. Being put into bat, the Sushma Verma-led side put on 167/2 on the scoreboard. The India all-rounder and Nikita Chauhan (43) were involved in a 90-run opening partnership.

Goa’s chase, on the other hand, got off to a disastrous start as Anisha Ansari ripped through the top-order, leaving them reeling at 24/3.

When Goa looked down and out, skipper Shikha Pandey (77) and Tejashwini Duragad (40) stepped up. However, Deol came to the rescue again as she ended the 110-run partnership by dismissing Duragad. Shikha fell to Deol, too, as Goa fell short by 3 runs in the end.

Brief Scores: Himachal Pradesh 167/2 in 20 overs (Harleen Deol 84*, Nikita Chauhan 43) defeated Goa 164/7 in 20 overs (Shikha Pandey 77, Anisha Ansari 22/3, Harleen Deol 37/2) by 3 runs

Navgire stars again for Nagaland but her team fails to sail through

Qualifying from the Plate Group, Nagaland bowed out from the tourney on Thursday. But not before Kiran Navgire had struck another half-century. Navgire’s unreal form continued after Nagaland won the toss and chose to bat. She scored 56 off 44 balls, with five fours and three sixes.

Unfortunately, she did not receive much support from the other end as Nagaland could only muster 116/5 in 20 overs. Kerala chased the target in 18 overs, with opener Akshaya A remaining not-out on 57.

Brief Scores: Kerala 117/3 in 18 overs (Akshaya A 57*, P N Khemnar 23/2) defeated Nagaland 116/5 in 20 overs (Kiran Navgire 56, Darsana Mohanan 17/2) by 7 wickets

Shafali Verma leads by example to take Haryana to the quarter-finals

Openers Shafali Verma (65*) and Reema Sisodia (43) made short work of Jharkhand’s target as Haryana romped home to a nine-wicket victory in just 11.2 overs. Though Sisodia could not remain unbeaten, the duo had done the damage already.

Shafali was at her attacking best as her knock was studded with nine fours and three sixes. Earlier, Jharkhand lost wickets at regular intervals to manage 110/8 in their 20 overs. Verma added two wickets to her kitty with her off-spin bowling.

Brief Scores: Haryana 112/1 in 11.2 overs (Shafali Verma 65*, Reema Sisodia 43) defeated Jharkhand 110/8 in 20 overs (Monika 27, Shafali Verma 16/2) by 9 wickets

DC should promote Shardul Thakur to ensure a better finish: Virender Sehwag

The Delhi Capitals' (DC) journey in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 has been a roller-coaster ride. First, they started with a fantastic victory against Mumbai Indians (MI). Then, they won a couple of one-sided affairs against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Punjab Kings (PBKS). Subsequently, they also suffered dramatic defeats against Gujarat Titans (GT), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Royal Challengers (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals (RR). Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag believes DC's poor finishing is responsible for these losses, and it's something they need to address before their crucial encounter against KKR. Speaking to Cricbuzz, Sehwag opined that despite having several dynamic players in their line-up, DC's finishing has become a matter of concern for them. Further elaborating on this issue, Sehwag said that Rovman Powell had been a complete failure, whereas skipper Rishabh Pant has not provided the final flourish. "Rovman Powell hasn't done anything substantial after all these games. Rishabh Pant too. He hasn't had a great season so far. He has been batting well in patches but hasn't been able to score big runs. They had Stoinis and Hetmyer last year to finish matches for them, so Pant's knocks of 30-40 runs did look good on the scorecard back then. But now there's nobody down the order to finish," Sehwag commented. The Nawab of Najafgarh had a couple of suggestions for the Rishabh Pant-led team to resolve this problem. Firstly, he advised the DC openers Prithvi Shaw and David Warner to bat till the 15th or 16th over of the innings. In another way, as per Sehwag, DC can promote Shardul Thakur up the order and utilise his batting prowess to have a better finish. "Shaw and Warner have been scoring runs, and they need to bat for a long period of time. They will have to stay there for 15-16 overs for DC to gain an advantage over their opposition", the former Indian opener said. "If that doesn't happen, someone from the middle order will have to take responsibility. You can send Shardul Thakur up the order. He hasn't been doing much with the ball and could maybe come up with useful contributions with the bat," the 43-year-old concluded. This season, Thakur has scored 80 runs at an astounding strike rate of 186.05. His 11-ball 22 was a handy cameo against MI, and his blistering unbeaten knock of 29 runs off just 11 balls helped DC post an above-par total of 215 against KKR. The hearty all-rounder also played a quick-fire knock of 17 runs off nine deliveries against RCB and took DC closer to the target of 190. The Mumbai cricketer has exhibited his exceptional hitting skills many times in the international games.
