Scott Styris backs Shreyas Iyer as the Future Indian captain

Former New Zealand cricketer Scott Styris reckons that Shreyas Iyer is a future captaincy candidate of the Indian team if he can resolve his problems against short-pitched bowling.

During an interaction on Sports 18, Styris was asked if the alarm bells are ringing for Shreyas Iyer given his weakness against the short ball or if he sees him getting more opportunities. The ex-Kiwi all-rounder responded by saying that he would like to stick with Iyer as he possesses quality leadership skills.

Iyer can lead India: Styris

"One hundred percent, what I really like about Shreyas Iyer is the leadership quality that he possesses. I think he is a real possibility to be a captain as well for India. For that reason, I would like to see him in and even given more and more opportunities around this squad," Scott Styris told Sports 18.

Iyer has exposed his weakness, says Styris

Off-late Iyer has been facing criticism for his technical flaw while facing the short-pitched deliveries. He was left exposed during India's tour of England. Commenting on his woes against the short ball, Styris said there is no secret about Iyer's struggle against the short-ball ploy.

"What I don't like is that there is no secret about Shreyas Iyer now. He has real problems with the short ball. I think you will see a lot of teams attack him with their quick bowlers, attack him at the body with the bouncers, under the armpit, if you like, because I am not sure he has found a way."

Styris has urged Iyer to find a way to succeed against the short ball trap

"It's now up to Shreyas Iyer to find a way to succeed against that style of bowling."
