SA vs IND | 1st ODI: Shikhar Dhawan hits fifty as India move steadily towards the target

The Indian team has started well on their chase of 297 set up by hots South Africa in the first match of the three-match ODI series being played at the Boland Park in Paarl. The team has so far lost only one wicket and reached the 100 run mark with a settled Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan at the crease and more than 30 overs remaining to chase down the target.

Dhawan, who is playing for the first time in the Indian side after the Sri Lanka tour with the second string side in August, started solidly and has kept on striking the ball well ever since. He lost his opening partner and Indian skipper, KL Rahul, as the right-hander was caught by Quinton de Kock behind the stumps off the bowling of part-timer Aiden Markram.

While the opening pair of Dhawan and Rahul added 46 in 49 balls, the partnership between Kohli and Dhawan is now 56 runs strong and it has come off just 63 balls and the men in blue look determined to chase down the 297 run target. Dhawan is batting at 64 off 65 balls while Kohli is at 24 off 32 balls. This was Dhawan's 34th ODI fifty.

A drinks break was taken at the end of the 19th over and at the time Indian score read 102-1. South Africa is yet to introduce their ace Tabrazi Shamsi in the bowling attack.

Babar Azam to lead ICC Men’s T20I team, Mandhana makes it to Women’s T20I team of 2021

The International Cricket Council announced the teams of the year in the men’s and women’s category for the shortest format of the game the T20Is. While Pakistan’s Babar Azam has been made the T20I skipper, England’s Nat Sciver will lead the Women’s team. Among the players selected in the playing xi, the men’s side has got three each from Pakistan and South Africa while two players have been chosen from the world champion side Australia. One player each from England, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh also made it to the xi. Surprisingly, there was no place for any player from T20 World Cup 2021 runner’s up New Zealand and one of the most followed sides, India. ICC Men's T20I team of the year 2021 Jos Buttler (England), Mohammad Rizwan (wk) (Pakistan), Babar Azam (c) (Pakistan), Aiden Markram (South Africa), Mitchell Marsh (Australia), David Miller (South Africa), Wanindu Hasaranga (Sri Lanka), Tabraiz Shamsi (South Africa), Josh Hazlewood (Australia), Mustafizur Rahman (Bangladesh), Shaheen Afridi (Pakistan) As for the ICC Women’s T20I team of the year, it had a whole large chunk being dominated by England along with the captain of the side. Nat Sciver, the English Women’s team skipper has been chosen as the captain of the ICC Women’s t20i team as well. Among other members, India is represented only by Smriti Mandhana who had a great year in 2021. Tammy Beaumont, Danni Wyatt, Sophie Ecclestone and Amy Jones are the other English players apart from Sciver on the list. The team with the second-most players in the playing XI is South Africa, which has Marizanne Kapp, Laura Wolvaardt and Shabnim Ismail on the list. Thus in a list dominated by English and South African players, it was surprising to see Ireland’s Gaby Lewis and Zimbabwe’s Loryn Phiri being picked up as specialist batters and bowlers respectively. ICC Women's T20I team of the year 2021 Smriti Mandhana (India), Tammy Beaumont (England), Danni Wyatt (England), Gaby Lewis (Ireland), Nat Sciver (c) (England), Amy Jones (wk) (England), Laura Wolvaardt (South Africa), Marizanne Kapp (South Africa), Sophie Ecclestone (England), Loryn Phiri (Zimbabwe), Shabnim Ismail (South Africa)

BBL 11 | Records galore as Maxwell hits 154, guides Stars to highest Big Bash total in history

Though Melbourne Stars are out of the Finals race of the Big Bash League 2021-22, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis made sure that there was no lack of entertainment as fours and sixes rained at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, much to the relief of the battered Stars’ fans. Thanks to a belligerent 154 off just 64 balls by Glenn Maxwell, the Stars were able to reach 273-2, the highest team total by a huge margin in the BBL history so far. The previous highest team total was 232 by Sydney Thunder which was achieved against Sydney Sixers in Adelaide last season. This is also the highest total in franchise or domestic T20 cricket ever as it beat Trinabago Knight Riders' 267-2 which was achieved against Jamaica Tallawahs in Caribbean Premier League 2019. Overall, the 273 by Stars is the third-highest T20 total after Afghanistan’s 278-3 against Ireland in 2019 and Czech Republic’s 278-4 against Turkey also in 2019. The unbeaten 154 by Maxwell is also the highest individual score by a batter in BBL history. He overtook his own teammate Marcus Stoinis on the list. Stonis, who also scored a brilliant 75* off just 31 balls in tonight’s game, had scored 147* against Sydney Sixers in 2020. In terms of the overall highest individual score in all T20s, this knock by Maxwell, in which he hit a record 22 fours and fours sixes, ranks at the ninth spot. However, 22 fours is the highest number of fours hit by any batter in any T20 game ever in history. Also, the total 29 fours hit by the Stars in this innings is the highest for a BBL game in history as well. Hurricanes had won the toss and decided to bowl first in this game, a decision that they would now be thinking very hard about. In reply to the Stars, the Hurricanes were 67-3 in the eighth over at the time of publishing this copy.
