SA vs Eng 2020 | T20 series preview - Cricket returns to rainbow nation

November 27 is a big day of the year for cricket fans. Three different cricket tours get underway on this date. India start their much-awaited tour of Australia while West Indies play the first fixture of their visit to New Zealand. Also, England start their T20 series against hosts South Africa at Cape Town.

Earlier this year, both teams squared off in the same country for a Test and ODI series. While England once again thumped Proteas at home in the longest format, the 50-over format saw a 1-1 result with one match of the three-match rubber washed out.

Now, with the World T20 pushed back to next year, this three-match T20 contest gains great value. England may be considered favourites for this contest also with many impact players in their side. South Africa, on the other hand, would once again be angling to find the right combination from their squad, especially in the batting department.

England batting: Solid and Stable

There aren't many concerns as far as England's batting is concerned. Their line-up is likely to be very similar to the one in ODI format. Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow form an explosive opening pair with a more reassured Sam Billings available as a back-up in case of an injury. Even otherwise, he is a useful prospect for batting at no. 3 or even lower.

Most of the remaining batting line-up picks itself. With the likes of Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, and Eoin Morgan, there is much firepower and experience in the middle-order for England. The joker in the pack is Dawid Malan. Once a promising Test player, Malan is now forced to fight for a spot in the T20 team.

Embarrassment of Riches

Interestingly, Malan's challenger for a spot in the batting line-up of the visitors will be all-rounders rather than proper batsmen. Ben Stokes is bound to play. But Sam Curran and Moeen Ali will be pushing for a spot as well. Especially, the former has made a strong case for himself with a blitzkrieg of 45 in just 18 deliveries during the most recent practice game. What works for Curran is his uncanny ability to get wickets despite a lack of perceptible threat. This, coupled with his batting capability, makes him a tempting pick for Morgan's side.

De Kock's Leadership on Show Again

For South Africa, this series would mark the beginning of Quinton de Kock's captaincy era in the shortest format. He led the side impressively earlier this year in the ODI series against England. To make matters easy for him, he was also the most impressive batsman for his nation in the tough home season, across formats.

Ace of Pace

South Africa's biggest strength in this series is likely to be their pace battery. With Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, and Lungi Ngidi, all available, there isn't much to worry about for de Kock, except choosing who else to try out. Andile Phehlukwayo would also be pushing for selection with his batting abilities complementing the bowling skills he possesses.

However, the SA team has picked a host of other seamers. Lutho Sipamla and Junior Dala played in the ODIs earlier this year. Dwaine Pretorius and Beuran Hendricks are more reliable with their experience. Glenton Stuurman is the new face.

Looking for Tahir's Replacements

The Proteas selectors have also chosen a host of spinners in their search for Imran Tahir's replacement. The pack is led by Tabraiz Shamsi who has been in news for his magic tricks as well as spin-bowling ones. Others selected alongside him is the experienced Keshav Maharaj whose budding career in Tests has been partially derailed with poor performances of late.

Other tweakers in the line-up happen to be Bjorn Fortuin, George Linde, and Jon Jon Smuts. The latter is more of an all-rounder.

Unsettled Batting Order

Apart from skipper de Kock, veterans Faf du Plessis and David Miller, the South African batting line-up is full of experienced batsmen without too many achievements yet in international T20s. Reeza Hendricks, Rassie van der Dussen, Temba Bavuma, and Heinrich Klaasen have shown abilities in other formants but are yet to establish themselves in this one.

Janneman Malan is one relative youngster at 24 picked in this squad. He might be the one to watch out for as Proteas look for some optimism after a dismal year-and-a-half.

South Africa vs England - First T20I: Match Details

Date: 27 November 2020, at 9:30 PM IST, 6:00 PM Local Time, 4:00 PM IST

Venue: Cape Town

Broadcaster: Star Sports and Hotstar

Pitch Report

The pitch at Cape Town can provide aid to swing bowlers if there are clouds around. However, in a T20 game, with the white ball, and little chance of overcast conditions, batsmen aren't likely to face any great dangers from the surface. Still, the new ball may move around. However, both South African and England will be more reliant on the pace and bounce of their seamers.

Weather

Weather on match day is expected to be cool and pleasant. There may be clouds in the sky but they are not likely to be rain-bearing. The temperature in the evening is expected to be around 15-degree celsius.

Probable XIs:

England: Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Billings, Eoin Morgan (Captain), Jos Buttler (Wk), Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Mark Wood

NZ vs WI: Grandhomme, Patel ruled out of Test; Santner, Mitchell called up

New Zealand has suffered a body blow ahead of the international season as all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme and left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel have been ruled out of the upcoming Test series against West Indies. De Grandhomme suffered an injury in his right foot while Patel tore his calf muscle, as per an Associated Press report. The team management has roped in allrounders Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santer as replacements for the injured duo. Both Mitchell and Santner are part of the T20 squad that will take on West Indies in a series starting November 27. “Mitch and Daryl will be available for the final T20 game before linking up with the test squad on Tuesday where we will monitor them closely to ensure they’re fit and fresh ahead of the first Test,” New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said. Daryl Mitchell had made his debut last year against England and proved his worth with the bat, scoring 73 runs in Hamilton while Santner has enjoyed an impressive season since he scored a century against England last year. “They both proved last summer in the Tests against England what they can do in our conditions with Mitch scoring a century and claiming three wickets at Bay Oval, while Daryl produced a polished half-century on debut at Seddon Park,” Gary Stead added. Meanwhile, Gary Stead has also said that Mitchell Santner will lead the Blackcaps in the third T20 against West Indies with regular T20 captain Tim Southee leaving early from the series to prepare for the Test series that will follow the white-ball series. "His calm demeanour along with the sheer amount of international experience will hold him in good stead," Stead said on Santner's credential to lead the team. New Zealand will take on West Indies in a two-match Test series starting December 03 at Seddon Park in Hamilton followed by the last Test at Basin Reserve in Wellington from December 11.

New Zealand's Greg Barclay elected ICC independent Chairman

Greg Barclay has been elected as the next independent chairman of the International Cricket Council after an extended round of voting. He will replace Pakistan’ Imran Khwaja who presided over the chairmanship after Shashank Manohar’s resignation from the post of ICC Chairman in July earlier this year. Barclay has been at the helm of affairs of New Zealand Cricket since 2012 and now he will resign from his post to serve as an independent chairman of the global cricket governing body. Apart from being the head of New Zealand Cricket, he was also the director of the ICC World Cup 2015 which was jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand. “It is an honour to be elected as the Chair of the International Cricket Council and I would like to thank my fellow ICC Directors for their support. I hope we can come together to lead the sport and emerge from the global pandemic in a strong position and poised for growth,” Barclay said on his elevation to the top of the ICC decision-making body. Barclay emphasized on the development of the game and said that he will work for strengthening the prospect of Cricket in countries where it already has its footsteps along with expanding the landscape to other countries as well. He expressed solidarity with all 104 ICC members and said that he will focus on the sustainability of the game. "I look forward to working in partnership with our Members to strengthen the game in our core markets as well as grow it beyond that ensuring more of the world can enjoy cricket. I take my position as a custodian of the game very seriously and am committed to working on behalf of all 104 ICC Members to create a sustainable future for our sport,” Barclay provided a broader outlook of his roadmap as the next chairman of the ICC. Notably, Barclay also warned the organisation of serious final repercussions if the ICC fails to host its marquee events in the next three years as it had to postpone as many as three global tournaments in wake of COVID-19 pandemic this year. “We have got to deliver the world events that are to come and those that are postponed. Not just for the cricketing outcomes but there are commercial concerns as well. If we fail to deliver all of those events then we will be penalised by the broadcasters and we won’t receive the last of the ongoing payments,” Barclay was quoted as saying by news agency Reuters. Barclay said in case of lack of global events, ICC members will lose out on revenue on which some of the member boards are heavily reliant. He added that subsequently, it will diminish the options for the ICC in terms of investment for the growth and development of the game. “That, in turn, is going to affect the ICC’s ability to invest in its own programmes and enable it to make distributions to members. Unfortunately, a lot of the ICC members are heavily reliant on those disbursements,” Barclay added in his conversation to Reuters. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has jolted the cricketing world with cancellations or postponement of many bilateral series and global events and Barclay will have his task cut out to resurrect the financial outlook of the ICC during and after the pandemic is over.

Pak invite Afghans for first official tour after PM Imran's Kabul visit

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has invited the Afghanistan National side for a cricket series for the first time ever. The tour is likely to happen in 2021; if not then it would most definitely happen in 2022. The news was announced by the Pak board after the country’s Prime Minister and its first and only 50 overs World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan made an official tour to the country across the Durand line. "We'll try to look for a possible window for this tour -- and if not 2021, we'll definitely try to plan a series in 2022 season," PCB chief executive Wasim Khan was quoted as saying to AFP. He further said that a cricket series between Pakistan and Afghanistan could be a ‘harbinger of love and peace between the two countries’. The two sides have so far engaged in only five official matches a T20I and four 50 over encounters, all of which have been won by the senior Pakistan team. However, during the last year’s World Cup warm-up matches, Afghanistan had defeated Pakistan, sending the cricket-crazy nation into jubilations. It even resulted in missiles being launched in the city of Kabul in mad celebrations that lasted the entire night. The game of cricket was introduced to the Afghans when they came to live in refugee camps set up in Peshawar, the bustling city of Pakistan during the Russian occupation of Afghanistan and subsequent Russo-Taliban war of the 1980s. Putting emphasis on the fact that Pakistan will keep on supporting Afghanistan’s rise in cricket, Wasim said, "A strong Afghanistan means a strong Asian block... so Pakistan will continue to play its part and help Afghan cricket." The Men in Green are supposed to play Afghanistan in a three-match ODI series as part of the 2023 World Cup Super League as well and most likely the matches would take place in UAE.
