Day 1 of the first Test match between South Africa and Bangladesh saw the Proteas outclassing the visitors, who had to struggle for wickets. With Bangladesh winning the toss, they put South Africa to bat and aimed to take advantage of the fresh wicket at Kingsmead, Durban.
South Africa skipper Dean Elgar recorded a century stand with Sarel Erwee for the opening wicket. While Elgar played out of his skin and went for the quick runs, Erwee was cautious throughout his innings and put a price tag on his wicket.
As both the batters seemed to be in complete control, Bangladeshi bowlers had no option but to play the waiting game. Mominul Haque and company came with rejuvenated energy in the post-lunch session as their bowlers led a fightback.
Khaled Ahmed brought an outstanding delivery from his armour to get rid of Elgar, who departed for 67 runs. Mehidy Hasan further played his part very well and added a wicket to his tally in the form of Erwee. The spinner again contributed for his side but this time as a fielder and pulled off an outstanding effort to send Keegan Petersen back to the dressing room. Ryan Rickelton also fell prey to a short pitch delivery off Ebadot Hossain's bowling as South Africa were reduced to 180/4.
Temba Bavuma and Kyle Verreynne's partnership late in the day helped South Africa again pull back the momentum to their side. While Bavuma brought up a half-century in the process, Verreynne so far is unbeaten for 27 runs.
Bad light brought an early end to the day's play, although South Africa by then had scored 233 runs for the loss of four wickets.
Brief scores:
South Africa - 233/4
Dean Elgar 67 (101), Temba Bavuma 53* (119);
Khaled Ahmed 49/1
