As many as four matches were played out on August 23 to cap the Group A segment of 2022’s Royal London Cup tournament. With the group stage coming to a conclusion, here is a look at the highlights from each of those fixtures.

Leicestershire vs Durham

Hosts Leicestershire limped their way past Durham’s total to secure a semi-final spot in the ongoing Royal London One-Day Cup 2022 season.

Their top-order made a mess of an easy run-chase, as they lost as many as eight wickets and consumed 46.2 overs to overhaul the visitors’ 197. Succumbing to 60-6 at one stage, batsmen Rishi Patel and Arron Lilley cracked match-winning half-centuries to help their side cross over the line.

Brief scores:

Durham: 197 (49.3)

Stanley McAlindon 50 (60), Mitchell Killeen 32 (51)

Wiaan Mulder 3-28, Chris Wright 2-23

Nottinghamshire vs Surrey

Nottinghamshire batters cantered themselves to an easy eight-wicket win over struggling Surrey at Welbeck. Earlier, Notts bowlers Toby Pettman and Brett Hutton shared the new-ball to shoot out their guests for just 181.

Later, half-centuries from Ben Slater and Lyndon James helped hosts surpass Surrey’s total with more than 14 overs to spare. The win also handed them knockout tickets for the Royal London title race.

Brief scores:

Surrey: 181 (39.2)

Tom Lawes 75 (63), Nick Kimber 34 (56)

Toby Pettman 4-44, Brett Hutton 3-24

Nottinghamshire: 182-2 (31.5)

Ben Slater 82* (98), Lyndon James 54 (62)

Nottinghamshire won by 8 wickets

Sussex vs Middlesex

Hosts Sussex charted their third 350-plus total of the last 10 days by amassing 400-4 against Middlesex at Hove. Tom Alsop hammered an unbeaten 189 while captain Cheteshwar Pujara continues to reform his One-Day mode with another rapid ton.

If the batting savagery was not enough, Sussex bowlers Henry Crocombe and Delray Rawlins further demoralised Stephen Eskinazi’s drawcards in the second half of the match. To sum up the day, Sussex capped off their Group A campaign with a 157-run win, one which also earned them a spot in the semi-finals.

Brief scores:

Sussex: 400-4 (50)

Tom Alsop 189* (155), Cheteshwar Pujara 132 (90)

Max Harris 3-98, Thilan Walallawita 1-32

Middlesex: 243 (38.1)

Joe Cracknell 71 (73), Martin Andersson 30 (21)

Warwickshire vs Somerset

Somerset ended their disastrous 2022 Royal London One-Day Cup run with a consolation win in their final game of the season. Off the back of Lewis Goldsworthy’s ton and James Rew’s 96, they posted 266-5 off their 50 overs.

Jack Brooks’ imperial four-fer in the run-chase handed them a thrilling 14-run win in the final over. Their effort at Birmingham also marked their first win of the season, thus barely avoiding this year’s wooden-spooners tag.

Brief scores:

Somerset: 266-5 (50)

Lewis Goldsworthy 111 (116), James Rew 96 (120)

Liam Norwell 2-44, Oliver Hannon-Dalby 2-46

Will Rhodes 92 (103), Ethan Brookes 51 (57)

Jack Brooks 4-38, Lewis Goldsworthy 2-58
