Rory Burns aims at Test return leaving behind Ashes horrors

Rory Burns, who had a forgettable Ashes down under, is hopeful of his comeback into England’s test side in the upcoming home summer. Owing to his extremely poor returns in the Ashes, Burns was replaced by Alex Lees in the English test team that toured West Indies. However, the left-handed batter from Surrey has admitted that he has buried the horrifying memories of the Ashes and has worked a lot on his game which would enable him in making a grand return.

When enquired about his Ashes memories which started with Mitchell Starc disturbing his stumps around his legs, Burns said that he has already forgotten those events and mentioned how his time off the field made him reassess his technique.

“Did I visualise getting a first-baller? No, I didn’t. I’ve kind of put it to bed. I had some good time off when I came home. Lots of family time. I reassessed my game and tried to work on various things from a technical aspect. Just little tweaks I could make to then go again”, Burns said.

The gritty left-handed batsman, who will captain Surrey’s young bunch of players in the upcoming County Championship, also emphasised getting good scores in the English domestic competition. He stressed that he still aims at getting better every time he holds his bat, despite being a 32-match veteran for England.

“There are County attacks looming around the corner. I’m still looking to improve, still looking to get better. I think I can. I’ll go again and try to score runs”, the English opener said.

Burns further said that they are short of experience this time as they don’t have Jade Dernbach and Rikki Clarke in their set-up anymore. But he also termed it as a golden opportunity for the young players to establish themselves in the side by proving their worth on the field.

“We’ve lost experience. But it’s exciting because the lads have places to fill and opportunities to grasp”, he concluded.
