In the spiritual heart of India, Varanasi, several Indian cricket fans gathered to perform puja and havan rituals, seeking divine blessings for Team India’s semi-final clash against Australia in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. For millions, cricket is more than a sport, it’s a religion and in Varanasi, where faith and culture intertwine, the prayers reflect a nation’s collective plea.

The stakes could not be higher. On March 4, India will face Australia in Dubai, reigniting cricket’s fiercest modern rivalry. While India enters the match as a dominant force in recent bilateral contests, their record against Australia in ICC tournament knockouts remains a haunting narrative.

Since 2010, India has lost three of four knockout clashes to the Aussies, including the 2023 World Cup final and the 2015 World Cup semi-final. The scars of these defeats run deep, and fans in Varanasi, and across India, are leaving no stone unturned to tilt fate in their team’s favour.

Fans Arrange Havan, Prays With Posters Of Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma

Shockingly in a video that is now being widely circulated via the YouTube channel Northeast Live, fans were seen offering prayers to gods while holding posters of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya in hand. There was also a background poster dedicated to the Champions Trophy points table.

Hence, emotions are flying high and so is religious faith amongst fans for the upcoming clash, since India has been at the receiving end from Australia in ICC knockouts.

India’s sole T20 World Cup (2007) and Champions Trophy (2017) knockout wins against Australia offer fleeting solace. As Rohit Sharma’s men gear up for Dubai, the pressure is palpable. With Virat Kohli in sublime form and young guns like Shubman Gill rising to the occasion, India has the firepower to rewrite history.
