PSL 6: Drubbed by Lahore, Karachi looking to challenge the might of Peshawar

Slowly and steadily, the Pakistan Super League is picking pace and along with its increase in intensity, the matches are getting interesting with passing time. In the 13th game of the tournament and we are still to find a team that can defend a total in this PSL.  It is at this juncture that Karachi would face a Peshawar side which is ruling the roost right now.

While Karachi have been drubbed by Lahore in the last game, Peshawar have achieved back to back wins in their last three games to get to the top of the table. The Zalmis are behaving like a well-oiled machine with all screws fitting in place. Karachi have won two and lost two and are therefore in the middle of the table. They would be looking to get one in the kitty and get up the table with a win in this game.

Karachi would count on experienced pros to deliver

In the last game, Babar Azam, the best Karachi batman along with Joe Clarke, a man in great form, failed. Yet they got to 186 in 20 overs. If these guys performed to their potential, the chances of getting past 200 would improve. Along with their batsmen getting in form, what Karachi need is their skipper getting proactive and rotating bowlers properly. Instead of giving Mohammad Amir an extra over in the last game when he was on fire, Imad Wasim gave an easy pass out to a struggling Ben Dunk, who then went on to score a winning knock.

Apart from that, the fact that Wasim did not bowl himself at all was also a drawback that he needs to work on going forward.

Peshawar just needs to carry on

In their last game against Islamabad, there was nothing that Peshawar did wrong. They bowled exceedingly well, especially with Saqib Mahmood and Wahab Riaz picking wickets in tandem. The batting is clicking in every game with Haider Ali being their mainstay. Even experienced Shoaib Malik has contributed in every game by staying at the wicket and letting the likes of Tom Kohler Cadmore and Imad Wasim play their natural game.

With everything falling in place, the only thing that Peshawar would be looking for right now is to stick to each other as a team and keep ongoing.

Pitch Report

Over the last 12 games, teams batting second have won the game, indicating that pitch gets better as the game progresses and especially in night games because the dew settles in. However, in a day game too, the pitch just keeps getting better. In the early period, it has something in it to offer to fast bowlers, some juices from the surface to help them swing the ball. Similar assistance is expected in this game as the pitch would most likely remain flat for the rest of the time.

Weather and Toss

The weather is expected to stay moderate and dry during the day with hot winds blowing in from the Thar desert to the north-east of Karachi. However, the temperatures would be around the early thirties helping players preserve themselves from heat. The team winning the toss, would without a doubt bowl first.

UK govt to help England cricket recover from Covid-19 woes with financial package

English cricket is set to get a massive monetary boost from the UK government in the annual budget due to be announced on March 03. According to a UK Telegraph report, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is likely to get ‘10s of millions of pounds’ from the government under the provisions of a 300 million pounds package by the government to save summer sport in the country. Earlier, the ECB had informed the government of its financial constraint in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The board had informed that the projects planned for the development of the game at the grassroots level will face financial cuts as the board is focusing more on helping the counties that are struggling from the wrath of the pandemic. The ECB had also warned the government on the lack of funds for the development and propagation of women’s cricket in the country. The county clubs and other professional sporting bodies that faced a lot of losses due to pandemic will be prioritised for capital infusion under the provisions of this new financial package. The Telegraph further reported that the money granted to the ECB, and the other sporting bodies will be allocated through an independent board led by a former chairman of Barclays Bank, Sir Ian Cheshire. The funds the ECB will get from the government will also help them in the arrangement of bringing the fans back into stadiums from this summer which begins with a Test series against New Zealand. UK’s chancellor of Exchequer, Rishi Sunak too expressed enthusiasm about the financial aid to the ECB and English cricket and said that the summer in the country has always meant watching the England teams play in front of the fans. “As a huge cricket fan I know there’s nothing that says summer more than watching your favourite team. I can’t wait for sports grounds to be filled with fans with atmosphere again – this £300m cash boost will help make that a reality,” Sunak was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

Cricket gets forgotten in IPL, PSL is more rewarding: Dale Steyn

Former South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn has made a statement that playing in the Pakistan Super League is “more rewarding” than featuring in the Indian Premier League. In an interview with Cricket Pakistan, Steyn said that cricket takes a back seat in the IPL. “I wanted some time off. I found that playing in these other leagues was slightly more rewarding as a player. I think when you go to IPL, there are such big squads and so many big names and so much emphasis on maybe the amount of money players earn and everything like that, so sometimes, somewhere down the line, cricket gets forgotten,” said Steyn. Steyn further said that while he is playing the IPL, the right-arm pacer is generally asked about the money he is getting. “When you come to like a PSL or the Sri Lankan Premier League, for that matter, there is an importance on the cricket. I have only been here for a couple of days and I have had people in and out of my room, just wanting to know about where I have played and how I went about it. Whereas, when I go to something like the IPL that gets forgotten and the main topic is how much money did you go for in this IPL? That’s just me being brutally honest. I wanted to stay away from that and really put more emphasis on playing and bringing good vibes to good cricket teams and tournaments I feel are worth it,” he added. Steyn who has been a part of RCB and SRH in the past editions of the IPL before opting out of the upcoming season is playing for the Quetta Gladiators in the PSL. The IPL schedule is yet to be announced by the BCCI. The mini auctions were held in Chennai last month where South Africa’s Chris Morris became the costliest player after being bought by Rajasthan Royals for a sum of Rs. 16.25 Cr.

MS Dhoni to attend CSK training camp

Former India skipper MS Dhoni would begin his training for the upcoming IPL 2021 this month and is likely to join the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) camp on March 11. A franchise official while talking confirmed that the CSK captain would be attending the camp. “Yes, we are expecting all players to start coming in batches. Captain MS Dhoni will be available and attending the camp from day one. Players availability should not be an issue. We are very hopeful that the camp will successfully begin and we will strictly follow the same bio-bubble protocol and no additional measures are required to be taken at this stage. We have put in place stringent health and safety protocols for the camp and all the participants will follow mandatory testing,’ a franchise official confirmed to Inside Sport. CSK faced few problems last year after a number of cricketers including players like Deepak Chahar and Ruturaj Gaikwad were tested positive for COVID-19. The official said that the franchise will take additional measures in the tough times. “Last year it was unfortunate and we have learnt our lesson. This year we hope and pray nothing like that happens but as of now, we don’t see any reason why additional measures should be taken. We trust our contingency and logistical plans.” CSK bought Moeen Ali, Krishnappa Gowtham, Cheteshwar Pujara during the IPL 2021 mini auctions held in Chennai last month. The Chennai franchise is the second-most successful IPL team after Mumbai Indians. They have won the title thrice but they had a forgettable run in the last edition of the cash-rich league after the side was knocked out of the tournament in the league stage. This was the first time when CSK didn’t make it to the play-offs. Dhoni who hung his boots from international cricket on August 15 last year has been leading the team right from the beginning. Though, CSK was one of the two teams apart from Rajasthan Royals to be banned for a couple of years from the tournament after being involved in a spot-fixing scandal. CSK and RR didn’t feature in the 2016 and 2017 editions of the IPL.

IND vs ENG: Rested for T20Is, Jasprit Bumrah likely to miss ODI series as well

Cricket fans might have seen the last of Jasprit Bumrah for some time in Indian colours as the speedster is set for an extended period of time away from the action, and will miss the entire white-ball leg of the series against England. He has been released from the squad for the fourth and final Test of the series against England, and earlier was rested for the T20 series that will follow the Test series. Now, as per a Cricbuzz report, Bumrah is set to miss the ODI series against England as well. Notably, he was released from the squad due to ‘personal reasons’ and his rest is all set to be extended. Bumrah’s break from the game will serve both him and the Indian team very well as he has been a constant part of the team across all formats since the start of the IPL last year. He had also missed the last Test of the series against Australia in Brisbane, and India will not be willing to take a chance on his fitness in the fourth Test against England, especially with another spin-friendly pitch is in the offer for the game. He has spent a lot of time in bio-secure bubbles and with India standing close to qualifying for the World Test Championship final and a five-match Test series against England in England, the team would want to have him fresh and raring to go later in the summer. India lead the ongoing Test series by 2-1 and if they can avert a loss in the final game of the series, they will be through to the WTC final scheduled to be played at Lord’s. In case of their loss, Australia will be through to the finals with England already out of the race after the loss in the last game.
