The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Management Committee Zaka Ashraf has recently proposed the idea of a Gandhi-Jinnah Trophy to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The PCB suggested the creation of this trophy for a bilateral series between India and Pakistan, with the hope of regular matches similar to the famous Ashes series between England and Australia.

The last bilateral series between the two countries occurred during Ashraf's tenure, back in 2012-13. Currently, India only face Pakistan in multi-nation tournaments like the World Cups and Asia Cup. If India agrees to play bilateral cricket and travel to Pakistan, it would require approval from the Indian Government.

While Pakistan are in India for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023, Ashraf expressed his desire to revive the cricketing relationship between the two nations. He proposed the concept of an annual Gandhi-Jinnah Trophy, named after the great leaders of both countries and emphasized that no contest is more significant than India vs Pakistan.

"I proposed BCCI to play an annual Gandhi-Jinnah trophy likewise the Ashes. India and Pakistan can tour each other for this series," Zaka Ashraf told ARY News. "I suggested to the BCCI that we should hold a Jinnah-Gandhi trophy (named after the revolutionary leaders of the two Asian countries)," he added.

Previously, BCCI President Roger Binny and Rajiv Shukla visited Pakistan and participated in PCB's programs at Ashraf's request, where discussions about resuming cricket between the two countries took place.

Many former Indian and Pakistani cricketers have long advocated for the resumption of cricket between the two nations. However, BCCI's stance remains the same: any resumption is subject to approval by the Government of India.

The cricketing rivalry between India and Pakistan is considered one of the greatest in cricket history, capturing the world's attention whenever these two giants face off. Nonetheless, such face-offs have become infrequent in recent years.
