PCB awards youngsters as Tuba Hassan, Naseem get named for CWG, Ireland tri-series

In the latest developments, Pakistan Cricket Board has named a 15-woman squad for their impending obligations in the United Kingdom. Pakistan women will compete in a tri-series in Ireland and the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Notably, the national women's team's chief selector has kept the same team that won their maiden T20I series clean sweep over Sri Lanka.

 

The roster was chosen after discussions between Asmavia Iqbal, the chief selector for the national women's team, head coach David Hemp, and captain Bismah Maroof.

 

The two series will include eighteen players, including three reserve players - Ghulam Fatima, Sadaf Shamas, and Umme Hani.

Pakistan women's team will be warming for the Commonwealth Games against Ireland and Australia in Belfast in mid-July before contesting in the showpiece event starting from July 29.

 

The squad will train extensively at the House of Northern in Islamabad from July 1 to 11 before their trip to the United Kingdom on July 12.

 

Chief Selector Asmavia Iqbal stated in PCB's press release, "Following a successful series against Sri Lanka; we have decided to retain the same winning combination. Not only our senior cricketers in the side displayed great cricketing acumen, also our youngsters were outstanding and have raised their hands whenever the team needed them to."

 

The chief selector further congratulated the youngster Tuba Hassan, who recently registered the best bowling figures on debut by a Pakistani woman in T20Is. Iqbal also sounded confident about the team combination. 

 

"We are delighted with the start Tuba Hassan has had to her international career and feel her leg-spin will be a potent weapon for us in the days ahead. Ayesha Naseem produced a match-winning innings in the second match of the T20Is against Sri Lanka and proved her big-hitting ability. The tri-series in Ireland and the Birmingham Commonwealth Games will test the abilities of our players, and I have all the belief in them that they will live up to the expectations and show consistent results."

 

The head of Women Cricket in Pakistan, Tania Mallick, congratulated her team and thanked the CWG committee for accommodating Maroof's family, as the skipper's infant was previously denied accreditation for accessing the village.

 

Head of Women Cricket said, "I want to congratulate our team for putting up a solid and dominating display against Sri Lanka. Our team has all the potential to do well in the United Kingdom.

 

"I want to thank the Commonwealth Games for accepting our request to accommodate our captain Bismah Maroof's family at the games village, which will allow her to focus on the task at hand without any worries about her young infant daughter."

The likes of Daryl Mitchell and Cam Fletcher hit a half-century against the County Select XI. On the other hand, the team's only spinner Ajaz Patel was the consistent wicket-taker for the team. It will be interesting to see if the team management includes Patel in playing XI, as they have been featuring an all-seam attack in the recent few Test series. The likes of Tim Southee, Kyle Jamieson, and Neil Wagner are the confirmed bowlers, while it will be a toss-up between Patel and Matt Henry.
