Pat Cummins uncertain for Champions Trophy 2025 [Source: @ImTanujSingh/x.com]
Australia’s cricket fans are holding their breath as news breaks that Pat Cummins, their captain and spearhead, might miss the Champions Trophy. With a sore ankle and scans pending, Cummins’ availability for the big tournament in Pakistan is hanging by a thread.
This is a potential blow to Australia’s plans of reclaiming the Champions Trophy, a title they haven’t held since 2009. Cummins, who has been instrumental in Australia’s recent success, including their 2023 ODI World Cup win, is already sitting out the Test tour of Sri Lanka for personal reasons. Now, his injury has jeopardized his participation in Pakistan.
Pat Cummins Injury Woes Put Champions Trophy Campaign In Doubt
Cricket Australia confirmed the news on Thursday, stating that Pat Cummins is managing ankle pain, but the severity remains unclear. Chief selector George Bailey kept his cards close to his chest, saying,
“We’ll have to wait and see when the scan comes back and see how it's tracking. There’s a little bit of work to do.”
This means Australia is in a bit of a pickle. With less than two months before the Champions Trophy, time is running out to get their skipper match-ready.
Marsh to Step Up
If Cummins isn’t fit, Mitchell Marsh, Australia’s vice-captain in ODIs, is likely to step up to lead the side. Marsh has already been given the captaincy reins in T20s and has shown he can handle the pressure. The selectors have confirmed that Marsh will be part of the Champions Trophy squad, which is set to be announced next week.
Marsh’s absence from the Test squad for Sri Lanka was a clear indication that Australia is saving him for the Champions Trophy. But will Marsh alone be enough to fill the void left by Cummins, both as a bowler and a leader? Only time will tell.
Cummins isn’t the only pacer Australia is wrapping in cotton wool. Josh Hazlewood, recovering from a calf injury, has also been rested from the Sri Lanka Test tour. That leaves Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, and Sean Abbott as the quicks heading to the island nation.
But here’s the catch: Australia might only play one quick at Galle, depending on the pitch. This could mean more workload for whichever bowler gets the nod, potentially adding to the headache if injuries pile up before the Champions Trophy.
Will Australia Continue Its Dominance & Reclaim Champions Trophy?
It’s been 16 years since they last won it, and the team has been eyeing this trophy ever since lifting the 50-over World Cup. With India and Pakistan dominating the last two editions, Australia would love to get their hands on the silverware again.
But without Cummins leading the charge, their task becomes significantly tougher. His presence, both as a world-class bowler and a calm leader, is irreplaceable.
