Pakistan’s Imam-ul-Haq made the historic Test against Australia more special after he drove a length ball from Mitchell Starc for a boundary through the covers to notch his first Test century in Rawalpindi. The left-handed batter had played the anchor’s role throughout the day and held the fort at one end.

Opting to bat first, the home side were off to a brilliant start, courtesy a terrific first-wicket stand between Imam and Abdullah Shafique. The two batters had put 105 runs for the first wicket before Shafique played one in the air off Nathan Lyon and was caught by Pat Cummins for 44.

Imam was then joined by Azhar Ali who was unbeaten at 42 at the time of writing. The track initially had something on offer for the spinners but the batters have certainly frustrated the bowling unit in the late phase of the day.

Australia are touring Pakistan for the first time in 24 years. The second and third Test of the series will be played in Karachi and Lahore respectively.

The momentum slightly shifted towards the Sri Lankan side in the second session of the first Test against India in Mohali after they managed to remove a steady looking batting pair of Virat Kohli and Hanuma Vihari. The hosts had lost both the openers in the first session but crossed the 100-run mark, courtesy Kohli and Vihari who made sure that there were no further fall of wickets. Returning back to action after lunch, the two batters began from where they had left and eventually stitched a stand of 90 runs for the third wicket before Kohli was cleaned up by Embuldeniya for 45. The spinner breached Kohli’s defence who tried to negotiate a length delivery on the back foot but completely missed it. Later, Vihari was sent back in the hut after he played one on to his stumps from Vishwa Fernando. The right-hander was out for 58. The home side was 199/4 at the end of the second session.

Kohli, on Friday, became the 71st cricketer and 12th Indian to play 100 Test matches. He was felicitated with a special cap by coach Rahul Dravid before the start of the match.

New Zealand now needed four runs from two balls with only one wicket in hand. Dottin bowled a length delivery to Rowe but she missed it completely. Jonas who was at the non-striker’s end left the crease for a run but a confusion in the middle cost her wicket and New Zealand the match as they were bundled out for 256. The hosts didn’t have a great start to the chase as they lost wickets regularly and it was only Sophie Devine who held the fort at one end as she notched up a century. The home side was reduced to 215/7 when Martin and Kerr joined hands and provided the resistance with a partnership of 40 runs but failed to take the team over the line. Earlier, in the day, West Indies managed to put 259/9, courtesy a hundred from Hayley Matthews and some valuable contributions from Taylor and Chedean Nation. Tahuhu picked up three wickets for her side. “Just the fight we showed. To beat a team like New Zealand, to beat them in their home is a great achievement. The fight that we showed was immense. For me to come out here and put on a performance in the opening game, and win the game, feels really good. Hopefully we can carry the momentum through the tournament,” Mathews said after the match.
