Pak Spinners roll South Africa over for 220 in first Test

The Pakistan spin duo of Yasir Shah and Nauman Ali picked five wickets amongst them as they ripped through the South African batting order to bundle them out for 220 in the first innings of the opening Test at the National Stadium in Karachi.

At one point in time, the Proteas looked well poised to get a decent total with a set Dean Elgar batting beside experienced Faf du Plessis when the scorecard read 108-2 in 28 overs. But then things started changing from there on as du Plessis was removed by the veteran leggie Yasir Shah at 23.

Right after the du Plessis wicket, the Rainbow nation lost wickets at regular intervals with debutant Nouman and Yasir utilising the pressure situation to rattle the inexperienced batting lineup. Quinton de Kock, the South African skipper became 34-year-old Nauman’s first scalp.

All-rounder George Linde tried to fight a lone battle with his 63 ball 35, but that was not enough as fast bowlers wrapped up the proteas tail and finished the innings at 220. Apart from Yasir and Nouman, Hasan Ali, making his comeback in international cricket after a long injury hiatus, also picked up two wickets.

Batting in their first innings, Pakistan have lost both their openers in Abid Ali and Imran Butt. At the time of writing, they were 16-2 with their two most experienced and reliable batters i.e. skipper Babar Azam and Azhar Ali at the crease.

Quinton de Kock can play another 100 Tests for South Africa: Mark Boucher

South Africa coach Mark Boucher has said that present skipper Quinton de Kock can become the most capped player for the side. "It's a special occasion for any player. It's just the start of his career. There's possibly another 100 Test matches there for him," ESPNcricinfo quoted Boucher as saying. "Quinny is a special cricketer. He is the type of player opposition hope doesn't get into good form because he can take the game away from anyone very quickly," said Boucher. Talking about Quinton de Kock being the captain, Boucher said that the management has added an extra responsibility on him. "Being a captain is an extra [responsibility] we have added on to him. We're trying to help him out as much as we can in that department. But I'm very happy he has taken on that role," he added. The Proteas coach further said that he is optimistic that De Kock will be among some runs in the series against Pakistan. "I know it's tough at times, especially if your performances aren't exactly where you want them to be. Hopefully, we can get the best of Quinny in this series. It can only be good for him as a person, a captain, and also for the team," said Boucher. South Africa is touring Pakistan for two Tests and three T20Is. The first Test began on January 26 while the second clash will take place in Rawalpindi from February 4. The two sides will then travel to Lahore for the T20I series slated to begin from February 11.
