On this day three years ago, the cricketing world witnessed the end of an era. On the day India celebrated the 73rd anniversary of its Independence, the legendary MS Dhoni chose to bid adieu to international cricket and left a trail of memories in his wake.

OTD in 2020: Dhoni's surprise retirement shook the cricketing world

Much like his unpredictable strategies on the field, his retirement announcement took the nation by storm. Dhoni took to social media to convey his decision through a message timestamped precisely at 7:29 PM.

“Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout. From 1929 hrs consider me as Retired," wrote Dhoni in a video compilation of his favourite moments from a glorious career.

The announcement was bittersweet for fans worldwide. Dhoni’s last international foray had been a heart-wrenching semi-final at Old Trafford against New Zealand during the 2019 World Cup.

While speculations about his retirement buzzed before and after that World Cup, Dhoni's subsequent hiatus from bilateral series further fuelled the curiosity. The onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic only deepened the conjectures surrounding his international cricketing future.

Dhoni’s captaincy was nothing short of a golden phase for Indian cricket. He is etched in history as the only skipper to lead his side to victories in all ICC tournaments. His victorious journey began with the T20 World Cup 2007 in South Africa, peaked with the iconic World Cup 2011 win, and was rounded off with the Champions Trophy 2013.

While his international chapter concluded, Dhoni's passion for the game remains undiminished. He continues to spearhead the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL, leading them to an impressive five titles, the most recent of which came earlier this year.
