  • Otd In 1983 Kapil Dev And His Troops Lifted The World Cup For The First Time

#OTD in 1983 | Kapil Dev and his troops lifted the World Cup for the first time

On this day, 39 English summers ago, Kapil Dev led a one-of-a-kind rebellion that changed Indian cricket forever. On the back of some sterling performances from Mohinder Amarnath, Kris Srikkanth and captain courageous Kapil himself, the Indian team overpowered the might of Clive Lloyd's West Indies in the final of the 1983 World Cup.

Team India entered the tournament on the back of two successive substandard campaigns at England's 1975 and 1979 World Cups. Under the leadership of Srinivas Venkataraghavan, they faced first-round exits in both events, managing just a win over East Africa in the inaugural edition.

On the other hand, the West Indies had won both titles and were looking to complete a hat-trick of World Cup trophies in 1983. The dream looked steady until they met an insurgent Indian unit at the title clash, who scripted a remarkable comeback in the match's second half.

West Indies captain Lloyd won the toss in the final and opted to field first at Lord's. India lost key-batter Sunil Gavaskar early on in the innings. However, handy contributions from Srikkanth, all-rounder Amarnath and Sandeep Patil stretched their score past the 100-run mark.

The Indians were eventually folded out for 183 inside 60 overs. West Indies pace quartet Andy Roberts, Joel Garner, Malcolm Marshall and Michael Holding wrecked India's batting line-up by sharing eight wickets between them.

Later, the defending champions began their response on an unsteady note. Chasing 183 runs with one hand on the World Cup, Clive Lloyd and company slowly began to lose grip by losing wickets in succession.

India's Mohinder Amarnath backed his batting cameo with an imperial performance with the ball. He bowled seven overs only to concede 12 while picking three key West Indies wickets. Amarnath won the 'Player of the Match' award as India upstaged the two-time winners by 43 runs.
