NZ vs PAK: Misbah-ul-Haq gives reason for exclusion of Shafiq, Malik and Amir

Days in the international career of former Pakistan captain Shoaib Mallik and Mohammad Amir are numbered while the ousted Asad Shafiq will have to prove his worthvagain to make a comeback into the Pakistan international team, head coach and soon-to-go chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq has suggested. Misbah said that Asad Shafiq has been dropped due to lack of runs in the last few years while the duo of Amir and Malik have been axed with the purpose of investing in younger talents who can serve for Pakistan cricket in the long term.

“There are three major omissions from the side that toured England. Asad Shafiq has been left out due to lack of form after he managed 510 runs in his last 15 innings, including a total of 67 runs in England,” Misbah said in a press release issued by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Misbah expressed faith in Shafiq and said that the experienced batsman will invest time on his batting and regain his place in the Pakistan Test team for the series following the upcoming tour of New Zealand on the back of strong performances in domestic cricket.

“Asad is an experienced batsman and I am sure he will utilise this time to work harder on his game in the domestic first-class matches so that he, like Sarfaraz Ahmed, can reclaim his form and be back in contention for the upcoming Tests against South Africa and Zimbabwe,” Misbah added.

Detailing the overlooking of Amir and Malik, Misbah said that the upcoming series in New Zealand is invaluable for the Pakistan team as they are preparing hard to rise in the T20I rankings along with earning some points in the ICC World Test Championship. He said that Pakistan cricket has decided to focus on players who can feature in all formats and invest in them to shape the future of Pakistan cricket in a better direction.

“The matches in New Zealand are critical for us as we aim to improve our T20I rankings and also gain valuable points in the ICC World Test Championship. In this background and taking into consideration recent player performances, we have selected the best available players,” Misbah deciphered the tough calls made for the tour of New Zealand.

Misbah has already resigned from the post of chief of selection committee but he has set a theme for the development of Pakistan cricket team going ahead. Azhar Ali has been stripped off from his position of Test captain while Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan have been elevated to the captain and vice-captain of the side.

While Virat Kohli has been granted paternity leave for the last three Test matches, Rohit Sharma would be unavailable for the limited-overs series. Windies stripped off training rights after breaking covid-19 isolation norms

The Windies team in New Zealand have been stripped of their rights to train further during their managed isolation period. This decision has been taken by the New Zealand Health Ministry as it found certain players indulging in breach of the managed isolation’s code of conduct as set by the ministry for all visiting teams. The Ministry, on the evidence of CCTV footage from the Windies isolation facility in a Christchurch hotel, said that the team cannot train further till their managed isolation period ends on Thursday. The Caribbean team has had to go through 14 days of managed isolation on arrival in New Zealand, 12 days of which have passed. Speaking on the issue Dr. Ashley Bloomfield, Director-General of Health, New Zealand said, “As with other sports teams that have come to New Zealand, the West Indies cricket team were given certain exemptions from the managed isolation rules which apply to everyone else,”. “It is a privilege to come here but in return, they have to stick to the rules. Keeping covid-19 out of our communities and keeping our staff safe depends on it. They didn’t do that, despite agreeing to abide by the parameters of the exemption,” he added. Players were due to be tested on Wednesday for the second time since their arrival in New Zealand. If things go as per plan, they would be released by Friday and move to Queenstown where they play New Zealand A in two practice games. The tour however begins with three Twenty20 internationals, starting with the first one in Auckland on November 27, and later on, two tests beginning on Dec. 3, would be played in Hamilton and Wellington respectively. Both New Zealand Cricket and Cricket West Indies have said that they are aware of the breaches and are in full support of the steps taken by the New Zealand Health Ministry. “NZ Cricket will continue working with the West Indies team and management and relevant government agencies to ensure there is no repeat of these violations,” a spokesperson of NZC told. While CWI in a press release reiterated that it is ‘in full support of the New Zealand Ministry of Health’s position.’
