Notts Outlaws suffer blow as skipper Dan Christian pulls out on eve of Vitality T20 Blast

Nottinghamshire Outlaws have suffered a major blow to their Vitality T20 Blast campaign as their skipper Daniel Christian has pulled out of the group stage of the tournament after getting selected in the Australia T20 squad for the tour of West Indies.

Christian has been the pillar of Notts’s success over the last many years. He began his journey for them in the 2014 edition before taking over the captaincy in the 2016 edition. Since then, he has led the Notts to four out of five finals and championship on two occasions in 2017 and 2020.

In his absence, Steven Mullaney will lead the Notts in the T20 Blas scheduled to start tomorrow in Manchester.

Nottinghamshire coach Peter Moores conceded Christian’s departure has changed the dynamics of the team ‘late in the day’ but at the same time, he expressed the proud feeling for helping him get back into an ‘as strong a team’ as Australia at the age of 38.

"It changes things for us late in the day ahead of the tournament, but first and foremost you can only be really pleased for Dan. To be called up again by a nation as strong as Australia, and for that to come on the back of playing some of the best cricket of his career and at the age of 38, it's a great achievement for him. We're proud, as a club, of the role we have played in that,” Moores said.

He commended Christian’s longevity and said that life without him with the Notts will be ‘strange’ after led the side to brilliant performances in the past. However, he put the onus on ‘other players’ to fill in the void created by the all-rounder.

"It's going to be strange not having Dan around. He's been here for every Blast campaign since 2015 and he's led the side brilliantly as well, but what it will do is create opportunities for other players to step up."

The development has come in the backdrop of Australia selecting backups for the players selected in the original squad for the tour keeping in mind imminent pull out of players due to ‘bubble fatigue.’

Cricket experts and former players of the world are divided on who among New Zealand and India are favourites to lift the first edition of the World Test Championship trophy. "I don't wish to speculate on whether Kohli's reflexes have deteriorated. But if the pitch and overall conditions favour seam and swing, he is also likely to struggle along with others as was demonstrated in New Zealand,"Turner was quoted as saying by The Telegraph newspaper. "Once again, conditions are going to be pivotal. I think it is true to say that the home conditions, where batsmen are brought up, play a significant part in the technique and skills of a player… English conditions are generally closer to those in New Zealand. "Although it seems that in more recent times, pitches in India can assist seam bowling, they still can't be compared to conditions in New Zealand. This was exposed when India last toured New Zealand." India had lost the two-match Test series on the tour of New Zealand early last year. None of the Indian batsmen could manage to score a Test hundred on pitches that supported seam bowling.

Ben Stokes likely to play for Durham in T20 Blast

England all-rounder Ben Stokes is likely to be back in action with a T20 Blast game for Durham next week. "Details of Stokes's comeback are yet to be confirmed by the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) and he could target one of the back-to-back 2nd XI T20s against Lancashire on June 14, but Durham have four fixtures in the Blast from June 15-20 and he is likely to return in one of them," said a report in espncricinfo.com. The all-rounder will feature in the competition for the first time in three years. Stokes who was a part of the Rajasthan Royals franchise had to pull out of the IPL 2021 earlier after fracturing his left index finger. The cash-rich league was later suspended on May 4 after there was a rise in Covid-19 cases within the franchise teams. The tournament is now slated to resume in the UAE in September. The left-handed batsman had written about his recovery in his Daily Mirror column last week. "I am able to bowl, I am able to get in the gym and I am able to hit some balls again so I am at an exciting point of my recovery where full-on training is not that far away and then I can start thinking about playing in a match again," he said.

BCCI considering break after WTC final to allow players 'switch off' time

Addressing the issue of prolonged stay of players inside the biosecure bubble, the BCCI is considering a break of some weeks in the period between the conclusion of the World Test Championship final against New Zealand and the start of the Test series against England. The WTC final is scheduled to conclude on June 23 including a reserve day for the big clash and the Test series against England is scheduled to begin on August 04. A report by the news agency PTI has quoted an unnamed BCCI official saying that players will be allowed to leave the bubble to go on a holiday or meeting friends and family in order to ‘switch off’ the hustle and bustle of playing international games while staying in isolation. “As skipper Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri had told the media at the pre-departure press conference, there will be a break. There is a six-week gap between WTC final and opening Test against England, so we had to address the issue of players’ well-being. Within UK, they can disperse off, go for a holiday, meet friends and family,” PTI quoted a BCCI official as saying. “Most of them have come to UK for multiple times and have friends and acquaintances around the country. It’s only fair that they can switch off,” PTI quotes the official further. The team has already reached Southampton and started their preparation for the WTC final against New Zealand.

ICC crowns Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21 as 'The Ultimate Test Series'

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has crowned the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21 as the The Ultimate Test Series. The ICC had shortlisted 16 series and the governing body then asked the users to vote for their favourite one among the lot. “We whittled it down to a shortlist of 16 and from there we let you take over. Across 15 head-to-heads, over seven million votes were cast as the 16 series were knocked out one by one until there was only one left standing - the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy,” the ICC said. The Indian team defended the title in Australia after beating the Tim Paine-led side 2-1 in a four-match series. But the series had all the drama, tension and everything that a cricket fan looks forward to especially when teams like India and Australia are battling it out against each other. India were bundled out for 36 in the first Test (Day-Night Test) handing the home side a 1-0 lead. To add to this, India’s regular captain had to return home for the birth of his first child and the captaincy was taken over by his deputy Ajinkya Rahane. Rahane’s problems began to accumulate with every passing day of the series as the Indian team lost key players after they sustained respective injuries. The likes of Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul and Hanuma Vihari were ruled out of the series. But the injuries weren’t the only concern that India had faced. The visitors were also racially abused. It was a pretty tough time for the Indian team both on and off the field but the youngsters took the onus on themselves and created history.
