Neesham links up with Northamptonshire for Vitality Blast 2022

New Zealand international Jimmy Neesham has signed up with English county Northamptonshire for the upcoming Vitality Blast 2022 and if possible, he would be available for the County Championship for which the team has qualified in Division 1.

“I’m excited to get going with Northamptonshire in 2022. The club has a fantastic history in the Blast and I hope that we can recreate those successes from 2013 and 2016,” Neesham was quoted as saying in a press release by the team.

“The opportunity to possibly play some First-Class cricket for the county in Division One is also an exciting challenge. I look forward to linking up with everyone at Wantage Road soon,” he added further.

Northamptonshire Steelbacks won the Blast in 2013 and 2016 and were runners-up in 2015. The best that they have achieved since then is a Quarterfinals finish in the 2020 season.

Neesham, who made his T20 debut in 2010, has ever since played 181 matches, scoring 2,360 runs and taking 158 wickets in them. Steelbacks’ Skipper Josh Cobb was excited to have Neesham in the team as he played alongside him for Welsh Fire in The Hundred.

“Having spent time with him at the Welsh Fire in The Hundred last year I know what he can bring to us,” said Cobb.

“He’s a three-dimensional cricketer with genuine power and a high strike rate in the middle order, but it was his character that stood out to me. He’s someone who wants to win and is very selfless, he’s a real team-first kind of player.

I’m looking forward to having him here as a leader, to pass on his experience and help drive us to be better,” he added.

BBL Player of the tournament Ben McDermott eyes IPL contract

Hobart Hurricanes’ Ben McDermott who was in form of his life during his stint at the Big bash League 2021-22, scoring 577 runs in 13 innings with two centuries to his name, is expecting to get picked in the IPL 2022 Mega Auctions scheduled to take place on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru. "If I don't get picked up this year not sure when I will," he said. "There's not too much I can do now, it's all up to those people in charge,” ESPNCricinfo quoted McDermott as saying. The 27-year-old who was picked in the Australian squad for the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka earlier on Tuesday, also said that he is more ready than ever before to represent the Aussies. "I feel like I'm on top of my game whereas in previous years I have sort of been in and out through player bans, Covid, all that sort of stuff, that's how I've got my opportunities,” he said. "I feel like I'm more ready than ever to play for Australia and I've developed a lot of learnings through those experiences. They haven't been good ones, I won't shy away from that, but definitely learnt and come back better,” added McDermott. The right-handed wicket-keeper batter who was striking at 136 in the recent BBL and has been in great form for Hurricanes overall in the past many seasons, said that though he was disappointed to miss out on the World Cup squad, but did not repent it much. "I was very disappointed when I heard I wasn't going to be part of that squad, that would have been awesome to experience, but in a way, I was glad I was left out. You saw with a player like Josh Inglis, who took my spot, he went over there and didn't play a game and missed a lot of the domestic cricket," McDermott said. The batter now hopes to utilise his form into the upcoming series as he is sure to get a go as an opener in place of injured David Warner.

Twitter compares Kohli and Maharaj after latter’s Instagram post with Jai Shree Raam

The Indian audiences were first pleasantly shocked and then took it as a challenge to appreciate as much as possible when they found out that he is a devout Hindu and wears his religion on his sleeves. In an Instagram post of the South Africa spinner, who has also led the Proteas in Sri Lanka in 2021, he wrote about the hard work and determination which helped him and his team beat India 3-0 in the recently concluded ODI series and signed it off by writing ‘Jai Shree Raam’. It was this post that was shared and liked by many Indians. But then came the comparison gang which started comparing Maharaj, a non-Indian on how he proudly showcases his religion with Indian cricketers, mostly former captain Virat Kohli, saying that he rather discourages people from celebrating Holi and Diwali with fervour (Kohli has always asked not to burn crackers to reduce pollution and not to put clours on animals). The comparison was always harsh and to make it even more illogical, the trolls resorted to Maharaj’s achievements in the series where he removed Kohli twice in two matches at crucial junctures of the game. In total, the 31-year-old took three wickets in the series and remained economical in all the games. Fuelled by this post, people searched the entire history of Maharaj’s posts and brought out only those posts in which he has praised lord Rama and lord Hanuman. While praising Maharaj for his religious beliefs is truly justified, it is the unrealistic comparison with Kohli and Indian cricketers that irked some people who also vented out their anger on Twitter only.
