NED vs ENG | Jos Buttler overtakes Sehwag, Warner and Afridi; extends purple patch

In Eoin Morgan’s absence, Jos Buttler led England in the third ODI against the Netherlands at Amstelveen. The dynamic batter celebrated his captaincy call-up with a dominant win and a ‘Player of the Series’ award.

Fresh from his Orange Cap winning IPL 2022 campaign, Buttler charted 248 runs across the three ODIs as England claimed the series by a 3-0 margin.

Notably, the right-hander achieved a major ODI record during the course of his run-scoring spree in the recently-concluded series. The 31-year-old overtook several ODI legends in the process, including David Warner, Quinton de Kock and former cricketers Shahid Afridi and Virender Sehwag.

The Lancashire cricketer clubbed 162* off just 70 balls in the first ODI as England amassed a world record 498-4 on the board. During the course of his knock, the wicketkeeper-batsman crossed the 4,000-mark in ODIs. Having made his ODI debut in 2012, the cricketer reached the milestone off just 3,281 deliveries.

Previously, former Pakistan captain and all-rounder Shahid Afridi had reached the 4,000-run figure in 3,930 balls to remain the quickest in the world until Buttler bettered him.

Australian opener David Warner (4,128 balls), former Indian batsman Virender Sehwag (4,131 balls) and active South African batter Quinton de Kock (4,255 balls) now occupy the next three spots in the list of being the quickest to reach 4,000 ODI runs in terms of number of deliveries faced.

Jos Buttler’s ODI tally now stands at 4,120 runs from 151 ODIs while maintaining an average of 41.20. The 2019 World Cup alumnus has 10 tons and 21 half-centuries in his batting register and is now expected to be seen in his side’s home series against India in July.
