Mohit Sharma wants Jasprit Bumrah to captain India against England

The one-off Test against England could witness a monumental juncture in India's rich cricketing history.

With Rohit Sharma's availability in question due to him testing positive for coronavirus, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah could lead India at Edgbaston on July 1.

Rohit fell victim to covid-19 during India's four-day warm-up game against county side Leicestershire. Bumrah was seen captaining the side after Day 2 despite having senior pros like Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara on the field.

India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) paceman Mohit Sharma believes that Bumrah should be appointed India's captain in Rohit's absence, which could break many taboos across cricket.

India's highest wicket-taker in the Test, Anil Kumble, was the nation's last bowling captain before MS Dhoni took charge.

Mohit talking to ANI, said, "I don't know how well you know Jassi (Jasprit Bumrah) as I know him very well. We played a lot of cricket together. He is a very cool and calm character. On the field, he bowls aggressively but off the field, he is very calm and if he becomes a captain then the taboo of fast bowlers can't become captain will not be there."

"An all-rounder can become a good captain as Hardik Pandya did in IPL. Paaji (Kapil Dev) did for India if you look at other countries Pat Cummins has led Australia. So, if Bumrah becomes captain then it would be great for India".

The 33-year-old has represented India in 26 ODIs and 8 T20Is while playing 86 IPL games for franchises like CSK, Punjab Kings, and Delhi Capitals.

He also lauded the nation's current crop of fast-bowlers, who have managed to deliver regardless of the available conditions.

"The best thing about our fast bowling attack is that regardless of the conditions you look at their effort, you look at their intent they are always looking to perform and give their best. So, the results have also come in our favour and in Birmingham also it will augur well for us," he concluded.
