In a significant development, veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has been added to Bengal's squad for the upcoming domestic season. The legendary pacer is a part of Bengal's 50-member expanded squad for the season and will likely participate in the Duleep Trophy next month. 

Shami Gets An Entry In Bengal Squad; Duleep Trophy Participation Likely

Mohammed Shami had a torrid run in the IPL 2025, letting Sunrisers Hyderabad down with his rough patch. His fitness concerns forced India to discard him from their Test plans, as he failed to make it into the squad for the England series. 

However, the veteran player managed to get a place in the Bengal squad, and, according to a report by ESPNCricinfo, he will likely be a part of the East Zone side for the upcoming Duleep Trophy tournament. This could mark his formal return to competitive cricket, allowing him to present a case for an international comeback. 

Apart from Shami, the Bengal squad comprises several familiar faces, including Abhimanyu Easwaran, Akash Deep, Mukesh Kumar, Shahbaz Ahmed and Abishek Porel. While Easwaran has been a regular member of the Indian Test side, Akash Deep, Mukesh, Shahbaz and Porel are renowned names in the IPL.

Mohammed Shami's inclusion would certainly strengthen Bengal as they seek to showcase their dominance in the domestic tournament. He has had a stellar international career, representing India in 64 Tests, 108 ODIs and 25 T20 Internationals. However, he has primarily been successful in the longer formats, powering India to numerous memorable victories through breathtaking spells. 

Talking about domestic cricket, Shami has played 89 First-Class and 142 List-A matches for Bengal, scalping 339 and 268 wickets, respectively. East Zone will take on North Zone in the Duleep Trophy quarterfinal in a high-voltage clash on August 28.
